LBU Scholarship and TASS Athlete Charlie Broome: competitive swimming goals, staff support, and future academic ambitions
LBU Scholarship and Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme (TASS) student, Charlie Broome, already has a host of accolades under his competitive swimming belt. After qualifying for his first British summer nationals (Top 25) and becoming British Champion in the 200m Butterfly (18-year-olds), Charlie was selected to represent England on the Youth Performance Squad, competing in the Swedish Grand Prix 2023 and winning the 200m Butterfly.
He is also in the Open Top 10 British swimmers for 200m Butterfly, and has been regional and county champion in the 200fly and 200IM. Charlie has his sights set on more competitive successes in the coming years.
Swimming from a young age, Charlie pursued the sport competitively until starting his undergraduate degree at Leeds Beckett University in 2022. Staying local was important to Charlie, allowing him to get involved in the university swim team, while also training with the City of Leeds Swimming Club.
Charlie studies Sport and Exercise Science (Carnegie School of Sport), managing his workload and commitments to swimming through time-management and acute self-awareness. “I try to plan times into the day in which I will work, helping me to stay on top of it and prevent falling behind,” he explains. “But I am also aware that it’s okay if I need to use this time for training or recovery purposes.”
His positive experience at Leeds Beckett is largely reinforced by staff support and understanding: “I’m enjoying my studies, and I’m able to receive help from my TASS lifestyle advisor, Fieke Rongen, if I have any issues,” he says. “TASS has supported me in many different areas, like physiotherapy, nutrition, and lifestyle. TASS has also made it much easier to communicate with seminar tutors and course leaders when I will be absent due to competitions. We have been able to change which sessions I attend so I don’t miss training.”
With competitive goals of improving his position in the British swimming rankings and qualifying for senior international meets, Charlie also has academic ambitions in mind: “Another goal is to finish my degree with a First-Class Honours” he explains, asserting that hard-work and dedication will make this goal achievable.
