Tiled background

This autumn, Carnegie School of Education at Leeds Beckett University is launching a brand new MA programme in Montessori Education. Only the second of its kind in the country, the Masters course has been developed to enhance the subject knowledge and research skills of those with a passion for Montessori education. The programme will be delivered both full time and part time online. Building on our BA in Montessori Education - led by Jeremy Clarke - the team has developed an inspiring programme which reflects Montessori education in the 21st century. We have designed a rich curriculum which examines theory, research, policy and practice in Montessori education globally.

MA modules include:

  • Montessori Education for Sustainability
  • Children’s Cultural Worlds
  • Diverse Childhood Identity and Inequality
  • Montessori Education and Social Justice
  • Research Methods
  • Dissertation

Each of these modules offers opportunities for students to pursue their own interests and undertake projects which reflect the age phase of children they may be working with or hope to work with.

Being a Masters student

Students who choose this programme may have different levels of knowledge and experience of Montessori education. They may be working in a Montessori nursery or school, or seeking to work in this type of provision having some experience and a first degree. They are also likely to have different aspirations, whether they are developing their skills for pedagogical leadership, specialising for career progression or beginning their journey to becoming a researcher.

Reflecting on my own distance learning Masters course, I think there are so many benefits to studying at this level. Immersing myself in postgraduate study offered the opportunity to follow my interests within the framework of taught modules. I also enjoyed developing critical reading and writing skills and the peer support we developed as a cohort of students.

Studying at Masters level can be challenging but the professional and personal gains are worth it. Postgraduate study can open-up career options, introduce us to interesting and like-minded people and allow us to specialise and thrive personally and professionally.

A community of Montessori research

Masters degree students will have access to a wealth of academic resources and study support. They will be taught by colleagues across the School of Education, including by experienced Montessorians as well as guest lecturers.

This new MA is an important strand of work for the International Montessori Institute. We are keen to build a community of research; a place where those interested in Montessori education can further explore, investigate and interrogate topics pertinent to this approach to learning. We hope you will join us.
