Forest Schools are nature-based learning experiences for children to get closer to the natural world. The experiences aim for children to develop a relationship with nature while supporting play, exploration and supported risk taking in a safe and natural environment.

Here at Leeds Beckett, Primary Education students can take advantage of the Forest School sessions we offer as part of the course. Students have the opportunity to take part in training courses around our stunning Headingley Campus, allowing them to learn how to guide their future students' experiences in these outdoor learning environments.

We spoke to four BA (Hons) Primary Education with recommendation for Qualified Teacher Status (3-7) students who told us about their experiences with the Forest School training courses and why they've been a valuable asset to their education.

Rhys Clancy, BA (Hons) Primary Education with QTS (3-7)

"I really enjoy learning outside a traditional classroom learning environment and having the freedom to explore the animals and plants while learning new skills such as firefighting.

"I've discovered in the last six months that I don't wish to pursue a career in a traditional teaching environment, therefore Forest School has allowed me the opportunity to learn new skills and consider outdoor learning as a career path."

"I enjoy how fun and practical the sessions are, with knowledge of the outdoors being taught as well as doing practical activities which can be used as a teacher.

"Multiple activities are covered in one session so you quickly build up a lot of knowledge and the sessions explain how outdoor learning can cater for all learning styles including SEND children.

"I feel like the sessions help me to get the best out of children, preparing me to provide opportunities for children's problem solving, their understanding of the wider world and teamwork skills."

Charlie Walsh, BA (Hons) Primary Education with QTS (3-7)

"So far in Forest School, I've been participating in many activities which have given me opportunities to explore and be creative. This has inspired me into thinking about what I could be teaching my future class.

"The skills I have developed so far will help me with my future practice, especially learning about safety when handling equipment and lighting fires.

"I think overall, Forest School has taught me the importance of moving the learning outside and giving children the opportunities they may not receive in the classroom whether that is leaf printing or making a den in the forest."

Kassia Ingham, BA (Hons) Primary Education with QTS (3-7)

"Forest School has shown a creative and engaging way to inspire children through nature. I enjoy participating in the sessions and developing my teaching style, learning how to help children become resilient, and developing their curiosity.

"Forest School not only allows the chance to gain more experience before qualifying as a teacher, but it's also an enjoyable, immersive and rewarding activity for us all.
