Centre for Young Lives Ambitious about Inclusion
Carnegie School of Education was pleased to host the ‘Ambitious About Inclusion' on Monday 13 January 2025 at Leeds Beckett University on behalf of the Centre for Young Lives. School leaders and strategic managers from services for children, young people and families covering the north of England came together to develop the Centre for Young Lives proposals aiming to improve inclusion within all state schools.
The Centre for Young Lives, in partnership with Mission 44 and led by their visiting fellow Jonny Uttley, CEO of the Education Alliance, is undertaking a programme of research on inclusion in schools which seeks to provide a picture of inclusive practice in action across the country. They will be mapping inclusive practice across the country through analysis of local authority day, and working alongside the sector to produce a measurable, shared definition of inclusion including barriers and enablers to delivery. The Centre for Young Lives will publish their final report in April, which will include recommendations to schools, Ofsted and the Government on how they can push forward their inclusion agenda and deliver on the opportunity mission.
During the event, participants examined proposals to improve inclusion, sharing their insights and experiences on key themes such as what inclusive practice looks like and what it could be, followed by attendees considering practical solutions to enable children and young people to benefit fully from education, and how we work to remove the barriers which presently exist for many children and parents.
Rachel C. Boyle, Dean of Carnegie School of Education said: “Too many children and young people are missing out on education for one reason or another. They are not able to fully benefit from their educational experience. This is an important issue and needs practical solutions putting in place so that all children have a first-class school experience.”
Anne Longfield CBE, Executive Chair and Founder of the Centre for Young Lives said: “This was a fantastic session. It brought together system leaders from across education and local government in the region to identify the barriers and solutions to opening up opportunity to all children in school and building a more inclusive education system. The drive and ambition of everyone there to deliver real, purposeful change was really inspiring.”
