PG Cert Coaching and Mentoring for Educational Practitioners
Mel tells us about her experience on the PG Cert Coaching and Mentoring for Educational Practitioners, how it has impacted her job role and allowed her to introduce coaching throughout the school.
The PG Cert in Coaching and Mentoring has not only supported my development in my leadership role, but more importantly, facilitated a significant shift in culture within the school as a whole. I began the course only a few months after taking over as Principal in an International School which had experienced a top-down approach to leadership. I wanted to introduce a collegiate style of working, where we learned from each other and weren´t afraid to take risks in the classroom and felt that this would be best achieved through the introduction of coaching.
One of the highlights of the course was the open and honest dialogue with my course peers. Being given the space to talk through issues and to be heard was so enlightening, that thinking rounds have been introduced in meetings to ensure that everyone has a voice. The taught sessions provided expertise in the field of coaching and encouraged me to read around topics, which has led to a shift in how I view my own leadership style. The course is taught in a small group environment, so we all got to know each other and our backgrounds, which enabled the course leaders to provide support to each of us on an individual level. The experience has empowered me to introduce coaching throughout the school, which has led to open dialogue and support between colleagues and develop a coaching framework throughout the education group I work for. Most significantly, it fulfilled my prime objective of changing our school culture.
