Head of Tourism receives national recognition for his contribution to tourism
Dr Peter Robinson has been awarded the 2021 Victor Middleton Prize for Education & Scholarship from the Association for Tourism in Higher Education (ATHE).
ATHE Executive Committee members overwhelmingly agreed that Peter demonstrated his commitment to develop stronger links between higher education and professional practice, in particular through his impressive engagement with numerous professional bodies, such as the Institute of Travel and Tourism (ITT), Tourism Society and Tourism Management Institute (TMI). These activities serve to illustrate his leadership in the field of tourism education, underpinned by his commitment to quality through external accreditation and his research activities in the field. Executive Committee members felt that all of these activities serve to benefit his tourism students, as tourism managers of the future, as well as benefitting the tourism industry through his professional and practical insights and guidance. Peter will be presented with a framed certificate at the 2022 ATHE Conference.
The prize is named after Professor Victor Middleton, one of the founders of tourism studies as a field of academic endeavour. The forging of stronger links between higher education and professional practice was one of his major ambitions. He acknowledged the need for rigorous research but especially valued such work being used to address practical problems associated with travel and tourism. Professor Middleton lived his professional life accordingly and the associated legacies are plain to see.
Professor Rhodri Thomas, Dean of School said ‘To achieve greater collaboration between industry and universities requires open-mindedness, an ability to listen in order to understand the nature of ‘practical problems’, creativity and a will to work together based on mutual respect. Dr Peter Robinson embodies these characteristics, and his efforts often illustrate the positive things that can be achieved via tourism education. I am delighted that his work has been recognised so publicly by his peers.’
