UKCEM Students meet Event Experts in Historic York
Second-year Event Management students visited the City of York to meet industry experts earlier this month for a day-long familiarisation visit to some of the region’s most iconic venues.
The students first visited world renowned York Race Course where Louise Dally, Commercial Manager Hospitality, explored the day to day and strategy insight of running a multipurpose venue that hosts 400+ events annually. This was followed by the Head of Operations, Phil Atkinson, who provided a masterclass on crowd management and health and safety obligations. Later in the day, the students went backstage at York Barbican where Alumnus Josh Cherrington (MSc International Events Management) gave an inspirational tour and personal insights into the vast array of careers in the events industry.
The final part of the York visit included a guided tour of the city centre, looking at how different locations are used to create large and small-scale themed events such as York Food Festival, before finally closing the day with York BID. Standing amongst the eerie ghost sculptures in the Museum Gardens, Operations Manager Carl Alsop and Rachel Bean explained how York BID leverages the experience economy to create a vibrant and lively city centre that has plenty to offer those who live and work in York.
The day was exhausting but helped our second-year students to understand just how many options they have in terms of future career paths. Level 5 Leader, David Dewhurst said: “ Today has been really inspirational. Meeting such a wide and varied group of event managers has opened our students minds to the versality of their events management degree. Our partners have been inspiring and our students too. It’s a wonderful foundation to build upon their career aspirations and open new doors.”
