Leeds Beckett's new partnership with IUSCA enhances the student experience, providing gold-standard accreditation for strength and conditioning courses and access to placements. It also opens doors for students to collaborate with global experts and gain valuable professional experience.

Tomas was one of the successful students selected for an eight-week placement at UCLA. On his placement he was thrust into the demanding environment of the university’s Olympic department, working across various sports, with a significant focus on the women's soccer team, ranked number one in the US.

“The placement was an incredible experience, providing me with new perspectives, ideas, and inspiration for my future coaching and strength and conditioning practice. I had the foundational knowledge from my course, but now I had the opportunity to apply it confidently,” Tomas said.

The experience taught him to assert his ideas and gain respect from the athletes, allowing him to fully immerse himself in coaching. This practical application of his knowledge and the feedback he received were instrumental in his development. Tomas' success at UCLA led to a paid internship with Leeds Rhinos Rugby League club. This internship was a pivotal moment for Tomas, allowing him to apply his knowledge in real-world scenarios and gain further confidence in his abilities.

“Experience like that teaches you a lot. You learn from professionals and players, then prove to yourself that you have the knowledge. It’s about solving real scenarios and applying what you’ve learned.” Tomas explained.

His placements, both at UCLA and with the Rhinos, helped him secure a full-time role with Leeds Rhinos, fulfilling a long-held ambition. Working primarily with the academy, Tomas runs sessions to prepare under-18 players for senior games, focusing on speed, acceleration, movement, and injury prevention. Tomas credits his success to the comprehensive education and support he received at Leeds Beckett. Studying both BA (Hons) Sports and Exercise Science and MA Strength and Conditioning, Tomas benefited from Leeds Beckett's state-of-the-art facilities and experienced academics.

“It makes a huge difference to know your lecturers have real-world experience. It’s applied knowledge from their careers, not just textbook theory. The facilities are amazing, better than a lot of professional setups. Elite athletes use these facilities, and we get to learn in the same environment. My lecturers have a huge amount of knowledge and networks. They’re willing to support you in your studies and career. I still speak to them now for advice and guidance.”

Tomas Watkins' journey from student to professional strength and conditioning coach exemplifies the opportunities and support provided by Leeds Beckett University’s partnership with IUSCA. His story is a testament to the university’s commitment to excellence, practical learning, and student success in the global sports industry.
