Kicking off my football career
Choosing a university course that aligned with Tom's passion for football was a big decision, and Leeds Beckett quickly became the perfect fit. With opportunities to dive into sports management, gain hands-on coaching experience, and explore football from every angle, his journey has been filled with growth and learning. Here’s a look at how his time at Leeds Beckett is shaping his path in the world of football so far.
From a young age, I've been captivated by football. Whether watching matches, analysing strategies, or diving into club-level play, the sport has always been a core part of my life. Football’s complexity, the endless scenarios and split-second decisions has fuelled my passion for exploring its every facet. I wanted a course that wasn’t just about techniques and tactics but delved deep into the broader perspectives of sports management, science, and strategy.
What initially attracted me to this course was its unique approach to covering a wide spectrum of sports, with a deep dive into football. I realised that this was one of the few courses that could truly offer a comprehensive exploration of football from different perspectives, including sports science, coaching, and management. The modules in the course allow us to back up our insights with solid data and research, equipping us with factual reasoning that supports our views on various aspects of the game. I also appreciated the chance to study areas of sports management that I hadn’t considered before, expanding my understanding of the industry and deepening my knowledge in ways I hadn't anticipated.
Leeds Beckett felt like the perfect fit for me for several reasons. First, it’s local, which made the transition to university life smoother. But beyond that, Leeds Beckett offered a program that was uniquely in-depth compared to other sports courses I had researched. The course structure here really stands out, and it’s designed not just to teach but to inspire us to view football through multiple lenses. It’s also fantastic that Leeds Beckett provides career support and pathways to break into the sports industry, a huge factor for someone like me who aspires to work professionally in football.
Visiting the campus on an open day sealed the deal for me. Headingley Campus, where the course is based, is simply outstanding. Seeing the top-notch facilities and learning about the comprehensive support available convinced me that Leeds Beckett was where I wanted to be. I knew right then that this was the place where I could work towards my goals.
The course has been great so far, the supportive environment here has made a huge difference in my confidence and learning. My classmates and tutors are always willing to help, whether it’s discussing coursework, brainstorming ideas, or encouraging me during group presentations. This environment has helped me grow not only as a student but as an aspiring professional in the sports industry.
My favourite module so far has to be Sport Management. The structure of the course is solid, and the module itself opens up so many new perspectives on football that I hadn’t previously considered. Sport Management has helped me understand football from a business and operational perspective, particularly when it comes to the marketing side of a football club. The coursework challenges us to think about real-world issues, like the economic pressures and brand management strategies that influence football today. It has pushed me to look at football beyond just the game on the field and understand the many layers that contribute to a successful club.
One of the standout experiences I’ve had on this course was the opportunity to work with Leeds United Football Club. This placement allowed me to gain practical experience with a club I’ve supported since childhood, and it brought my studies to life in a way I never imagined. By the end of my first year, I had the incredible opportunity to work as a coach with Leeds United, complete with a paid contract. This hands-on experience helped me earn coaching qualifications and gain skills in working with diverse groups, including different age groups, genders, and people with disabilities.
The most memorable experience, though, was traveling to Italy for four weeks to coach for the Leeds United Foundation. Coaching young Italian players was a challenge that broadened my understanding of cultural differences in sports training. There was a language barrier, but with the support of bilingual coaches, I adapted my training methods to effectively communicate with the players. The experience helped me grow both personally and professionally, and it was a privilege to represent Leeds United on an international level. It was a proud moment when I returned home with the title of “International Coach” and recognition from the Leeds United Foundation CEO for the work I had done.
With this degree, I aspire to work within a professional football club, whether in coaching, management, or another capacity. My goal is to share my passion for football with others and make an impact by working with players of all ages, genders, and backgrounds. This course has given me a well-rounded understanding of football’s demands and the many pathways within the sports industry, from physiotherapy to club management. Leeds Beckett has equipped me with the skills and knowledge to make my dreams a reality.
For anyone thinking about studying Applied Sport Studies in Football at Leeds Beckett, I would say go for it—it has truly been one of the best decisions I’ve made. The course is extensive and covers so many aspects that will expand your understanding of football or any sport you’re passionate about. Plus, the university provides great support in whatever area you’re interested in. Take the opportunity to view sports from new perspectives, as this course encourages that exploration and helps you develop evidence-based insights to back up your ideas. You’ll gain friends, mentors, and experiences that will shape both your career and your view on sports for years to come.
