Why I love studying Health and Exercise Science at Leeds Beckett
Studying Health and Exercise Science at Leeds Beckett has been a rewarding experience for Bea, combining a passion for physical activity with a focus on public health. In this blog, she shares what she loves most about the course and how it’s shaping her future career.
I chose to study the course because of my love for being active and exercising, especially outdoors in nature. Running, walking, and going to the gym have always made me feel good, benefiting my mental health rather than just being about competitive performance. I always knew I wanted to study a sport-related course at university, but I struggled to find one that matched my specific interests. Most courses I looked into focused on elite athletes and performance, which wasn’t what I was interested in. I wanted to study the general population, understand how to encourage more people to exercise, and explore the reasons why many don’t. When I discovered the BSc (Hons) Health and Exercise Science course (previously named Physical Activity, Exercise and Health) at Leeds Beckett, I was thrilled because it perfectly aligned with my interests.
When I visited the campus, I loved the open green spaces, which were important to me since I grew up surrounded by nature near the Lake District. The Headingley campus, right next to Beckett Park, is perfect for walking, running, and enjoying fresh air. I was also impressed with the campus facilities, like the gym and the athletic track.
So far, my favourite module has been Principles and Practice of Public Health, which focused on interventions to increase physical activity. I chose Girls Active as my topic, as I am particularly interested in promoting exercise among girls and understanding the barriers they face in participating.
I've had many opportunities at Leeds Beckett. In my first year, I joined an outdoor adventure day with other sport students on Ilkley Moor, where we went abseiling and enjoyed other fun activities. I also took part in a snowy weekend trip to Grasmere in the Lake District in December 2023, which was organized by Carnegie Outdoors. In May, I completed a two-day outdoor first aid qualification, which will enhance my employability in the future. During the second semester of my first year, I earned my Level 3 Personal Training qualification as part of a module. This was a fantastic opportunity, not only did I get to learn about personal training, but I also earned a professional qualification that can open doors for future jobs. In my second year, I’ve participated in several trips to leisure centres and public health resource centres, where I observed and joined exercise classes.
My favourite part of studying at Leeds Beckett has been the variety of experiences and opportunities. I've had the chance to go on numerous trips, make lifelong friends from my course and among my housemates, and gain practical skills and qualifications.
After graduation, I hope to set up an outdoor personal training business. This course is preparing me for that goal by providing relevant qualifications, experience, and industry knowledge.
For anyone considering this course, I would say go for it! It has given me incredible opportunities and a deeper understanding of the health and exercise industry. I would also suggest talking to as many lecturers as possible; you'll find some who share your interests and are more than happy to support and guide you.
