Dr Scarlett Drury, Dr Annette Stride and Professor Hayley Fitzgerald recently returned from Catalonia, after being invited to deliver keynote presentations at the annual LGTBIQ+ Physical Education and Sport Research Network conference hosted by the Catalan National Institute of Physical Education (INEFC, Barcelona). The event enabled them to share their current CSJ research on transgender sport inclusion policy, transgender inclusion in PE, and the new framework for belonging in sports organisations, with an audience of over 140 delegates including local Spanish politicians.
The trip also provided an invaluable opportunity to establish a new research partnership with colleagues from INEFC, an institution that shares a similar history to Carnegie, as the oldest PE specialist university in Spain. Since the event, Scarlett, Annette and Hayley have been officially invited to become international members of the research network, and are already working towards a number of publications with INEFC researchers. In addition, they have been asked to contribute one of their recent journal articles on transgender issues in PE to a prestigious new Routledge collection of the most influential published papers on LGBTQ+ PE research.
This collaboration represents an important step in our university’s journey toward LGBTQ+ equity and the power of networking internationally. Click here to read more about equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) at Leeds Beckett, or to join our LGBTQ+ colleague network, Rainbow Rose.
