Shrikant talks about studying MSc Sport Business Management at Leeds Beckett, what he most enjoyed and what he gained from the course. Shrikant also discusses how the course, as well as his 16+ years of professional cricket playing, helped to prepare him for his career. He's currently working as the head of cricket at Queen Ethelburga's Collegiate.

Tell us a bit about yourself and what you've been doing since you graduated.
Since completing my MSc in Sport Business Management at Leeds Beckett University, I've been actively involved in cricket development and sports administration. I'm currently in charge of cricket, where I oversee coaching programmes, player pathways, and talent development. I'm also involved in recruitment and marketing.
My role also involves strategic planning to enhance the cricketing culture and competitiveness within the organisation. Additionally, I've leveraged my academic insights to implement high-performance strategies, ensuring that athletes receive elite-level coaching and mentoring.
What were the highlights of your course?
One of the biggest highlights of my course was the practical approach to sports business management. The modules covered essential aspects like leadership, strategic management, and sports marketing, which are directly applicable to my role. Engaging with industry professionals and guest lecturers provided me with valuable networking opportunities. Leeds Beckett's strong ties with sports organisations also allowed me to gain insight into how elite clubs and governing bodies operate.
Tell us about your job and why you chose to study a PG course at Leeds Beckett.
As head of cricket, I manage player development programmes, oversee team performances, and contribute to the growth of the sport within my organisation. My role involves not just coaching, but also operational planning, talent scouting, and high-performance analysis, and marketing, all of which I gained some practical experience and knowledge in during my time at Beckett.
I chose Leeds Beckett for my postgraduate studies because of its strong reputation in sports management education. The course was structured to provide a blend of theory and real-world applications, which perfectly aligned with my career ambitions. The university's focus on sports leadership and strategic planning was crucial in preparing me for a managerial role in sport development.
How has your experience studying at Leeds Beckett influenced you and your career?
Studying at Leeds Beckett taught me the business acumen to transition from being a professional player to a sport business and development expert. The course refined my leadership, management, and strategic decision-making skills, which I now apply daily in my role. Additionally, the exposure to real-world case studies and industry best practices has helped me to implement innovative coaching methodologies and develop structured cricket programmes.

Absolutely. The course was engaging, insightful, and career focused. The combination of academic learning and industry exposure made it highly beneficial for my transition into sports management.
For anyone considering this course, my advice is: to be proactive in networking. Engage with guest speakers, industry professionals, and university-led sports initiatives. You should also apply your learning in real-world scenarios, whether it's internships, coaching, or club management, hands-on experience is invaluable. Finally, stay updated on industry trends. Sports management is evolving, and staying informed on innovations like data analytics, performance management, and strategic planning can set you apart.
What's next for you?
Looking ahead, my focus is on expanding my impact in sport/cricket development and sports business and marketing using my playing and working experience in the sport industry. I also aim to implement high-performance programmes, talent identification systems, and innovative coaching methodologies that enhance player performance at all levels.
Additionally, I aspire to take on senior leadership roles in sports organisations, contributing to sport/cricket’s growth globally. I'm also keen on mentoring young athletes and future sports professionals, ensuring they have the tools and knowledge to excel in their careers.

Shrikant Wagh
Shrikant is an alum of Leeds Beckett University, who studied MSc Sport Business Management. He has over 16 years of professional cricket experience, including playing in the Indian Premier League (IPL), playing for teams including Rajasthan Royals to PWI Ranji Trophy, and India A. Shrikant's passion for sport development led him to the UK, where he pursued an MSc in Sport Business Management at Leeds Beckett University. Currently, he is working as the head of cricket at Queen Ethelburga's Collegiate in York, focusing on high-performance coaching, player development, and cricket operations. Shrikant's journey is a testament to how education and experience can shape a multifaceted sports career.
