Navigating Graduation, Careers and Change
That time has come! After years of hard work, this summer was when many of you completed your studies and became graduates.
I hope you’ve enjoyed being able to celebrate your achievements and to reflect on all the effort that you put in and ponder the opportunities that are to come next.
Graduating is a time in which you deal with great change, moving away from friends and having your routines change can cause alarm. But I hope you allow yourself to reflect on how hard you have worked to achieve this, ‘what can I do next?’, space in your career. You are now equipped with, not just specialist knowledge in your field of study, but a vast array of transferrable skills. These skills can be applied to many aspects of what you choose to do next. The time you spent critically reviewing literature for an essay or resolving and overcoming differences of opinion during group assignments or placements – all of this will aid you, not just in your career, but also your personal life.
Granted, this change can feel daunting and the thought of having to now look at the next steps in your career can be stress inducing. It is okay to feel this way – allow yourself a chance to process and acclimatise to said change. During this time, you can also ‘take stock’ of what you can now offer as a graduate and explore the opportunities available to you.
For more information on support as a graduate and to hear experiences of other graduates, head over to the graduate pages provided by Student Space.
You can hear also hear more about wellbeing and graduating by listening to our Student Matters Podcast. In this latest episode of the Student Matters podcast, brought to you by Beckett Careers, we follow up with Freyja Douglas-McTurk, from our Student Wellbeing team, and discuss about staying positive when job searching. We cover how to remain positive while looking for a graduate job, how to cope with rejection and not take things personally and discuss the skills students can draw upon when completing applications and interviews. We discuss how it is normal to feel stress and pressure whilst job searching and that help is on hand, from Beckett Careers in the form of face to face and digital support.
