A student's guide to Halloween in Leeds
Halloween is creeping closer and third year English and Creative Writing student, Katie McKittrick, has shared a diverse range of events and activities you can get involved with this spooky season. Whether you’re a Halloween enthusiast, or even just want to de-stress after starting the new semester, check them out:
Halloween events in the city
- Bee-Crafty Halloween and Autumn Market: Get your craft on at Bee-Crafty Markets at Leeds Kirkgate on Saturday 26 October. They will have tons of autumn and Halloween decorations for all ages. It’s a great way to support the local community, as well as spend time outdoors and away from your studies.
- Frightmare Trail at Golden Acre Park: Golden Acre Park will be home to a spooky trail of jump scares and costumed actors on Saturday 26 October. Book your spot here.
- Femme Fatale Faerytales Halloween - Dracula The Story of the Brides: This event sounds especially intriguing to me because I love retellings of stories from different perspectives. The storyteller is hosting this event on Wednesday 30 October from 7pm-9pm. You can find more details and book your spot here.
- Halloween at Pixel Bar: This venue is my personal favourite because a gaming crowd is filled with welcoming people. They are having a Halloween quiz and costume competition on Tuesday 29 October at 7pm.They will also be serving spooky cocktails from October 25 - 3 November. I can personally say they serve my favourite drinks in Leeds!
- Boozy Brushes: This is a Halloween-themed painting party held by a drag queen where the guests are sipping alcohol as they paint. Join the event on Saturday 26 October at Be at One from 2-4pm. They even offer a student discount! More information and where to book your spot can be found here.
- Cirque Du Soul - Leeds - Halloween Special: This is a Halloween-themed circus event held at Beaver Works where DJs will be blasting music as well as providing the bloodiest decorations. It takes place on Friday 31 October at 10pm The bookings and details are found here.
Films and shows
- Hyde & Seek Screening - Coraline (PG): From October 26-31, Hyde Park Picture house will be hosting an iconic Halloween movie: Coraline. This venue only asks you to pay what you can if you want to attend. The times are different on each day, so I encourage you to check their schedule here.
- Most Haunted - The Stage Show: Join a theatre show that immerses you into a paranormal investigative thriller. The event takes place from 29 October to 31 October at 7:30pm. Bookings and information are found here.
- FILMusic: The Cabinet of Dr Caligari: This silent film from 1919 will be played alongside a live professional organist in order to set the bone-chilling mood. Taking place on Friday 31 October at 7pm, you can find more details and a spot to book your affordable ticket here.
Halloween at home
- Movie Marathon: Dust off your favourite horror flicks (or classic comedies if that's more your vibe!) and whip up some Halloween snacks like popcorn with black food colouring and bat-shaped cookies.
- DIY Costume Contest: Create your own costumes using affordable materials like old clothes. Have your housemates vote for the best creation.
- Pumpkin Painting: Carving pumpkins is too messy and overdone. Why not paint Jack Skellington onto a pumpkin instead?
- Board Game Bonanza: Get your friends together for a Halloween-themed board game night. One that I have recently discovered is the game Dread; it’s like Dungeons and Dragons, but with a lot less rules. All you need is a Jenga tower and a group of friends!
So, what are you waiting for? Get your best costume on (or cosy PJs!) and get ready for a horrifying Halloween in Leeds!
