Tell us a bit about yourself and why you chose to study your course:

Hi, I’m Raj Maru from Kenya, currently studying for a BA (Hons) in International Business at Leeds Beckett University. Growing up, I was captivated by how global markets connect and how businesses can drive meaningful change worldwide. My passion for exploring different cultures and understanding diverse perspectives naturally led me to choose International Business as my field of study. I wanted a programme that would challenge me to think globally while equipping me with practical skills for the modern business world. Leeds Beckett stood out because of its strong reputation in business education, its focus on practical learning, and its vibrant, diverse student community. I knew this was the perfect place to pursue my goals.

What have been the highlights of your course experience?:

The highlight of my International Business course has been working with students from all over the world. This multicultural environment has enriched my understanding of global business practices and helped me appreciate different ways of thinking. One standout experience was collaborating on a group project analysing the international expansion strategies of a tech start-up. It was fascinating to see how each team member’s unique perspective shaped our final recommendations. Additionally, the practical case studies and projects have been invaluable for applying what I’ve learned in the classroom to real-world scenarios. The supportive faculty and guest lectures from industry professionals have given me insight into current trends, while also helping me develop the skills I’ll need for a career in international business.

How would you say the course helps you to utilise your previous experiences and skills?:

The International Business course has been excellent at building on my previous experiences and skills. For example, I previously worked on small community projects in Kenya, which involved problem-solving and planning across cultural boundaries. This course has allowed me to apply those experiences to practical case studies and group projects. The curriculum encourages us to take what we already know and use it to tackle real-world business challenges, which has enhanced my analytical and strategic thinking. One module, focused on cross-cultural communication, helped me refine my ability to work collaboratively in diverse teams. These opportunities have ensured that my learning is not only theoretical but also rooted in practical application.

"The International Business course has been excellent at building on my previous experience and skills."

Can you tell us about your experience of any practical opportunities?:

One of the most rewarding practical opportunities was a consultancy project with a local marketing firm. My team and I were tasked with helping the business identify potential international markets for expansion. This hands-on experience allowed me to apply classroom theories to solve real-world problems while working directly with industry professionals. It was challenging but incredibly rewarding to see our recommendations implemented by the company. The course also offers guest lectures and workshops led by business leaders. One particularly memorable session was with a supply chain expert who shared insights on navigating global disruptions—a topic that felt incredibly relevant and eye-opening. These practical opportunities have been instrumental in bridging the gap between learning and real-world application.

How has the course helped your skills development?:

The International Business course has been a transformative experience for my professional growth. Through practical projects, I’ve developed my analytical and problem-solving skills while also improving my communication and teamwork abilities. For example, working on group assignments with classmates from different cultural backgrounds taught me how to navigate diverse perspectives—a skill that will be essential in my future career. Networking opportunities, such as guest lectures and industry events, have provided me with valuable insights into the global business landscape. I now feel more confident in my ability to adapt to different work environments and tackle complex challenges. The emphasis on critical thinking and cross-cultural collaboration has prepared me to thrive in a dynamic and competitive global market.
