International Business students gain industry insights at MemberCon25
Students and staff from Leeds Beckett’s BA (Hons) International Business course attended MemberCon25, the annual conference hosted by the Institute of Export & International Trade (IOE&IT). The event offered valuable insights into global trade, featuring expert panels, networking opportunities, and practical sessions on post-Brexit trade, supply chains, and digitalisation.
Course Director Dr Sukky Jassi, Principal Lecturer Dr Mary Leung, and seven final-year students from Leeds Business School (Benjamin Hallam, Ezaan Hussain, Aliya Shakilahmed Saleh, Ashley Dutu, Siddhant Vaid, Myer Burrell, Allan Sanca Gomes) from BA (Hons) International Business attended the annual Institute of Export & International Trade (IOE&IT) conference. The event was designed to provide industry members with practical tips, exporting strategies, and technical customs advice, as well as to mark the 90th anniversary of the IOE&IT.
The opening comments from the Director General, Marco Forgione MCIEx, celebrated the organisation’s 90th year in operation and reiterated its mission and commitment to international trade, despite the challenges faced. He told industry members that trading internationally and exporting has never been more difficult, but those who can navigate the regulations still have the potential to make significant profits. The ongoing disruption of supply chains, challenges around digitalisation, and the use of trade tariffs as political tools were identified as key factors contributing to this challenging environment. Strengthening trade relationships with key markets was highlighted as critical.
Dr Mary Leung joined the Regional Leaders panel to discuss the benefits of international trade for UK regions, where she provided an academic perspective on the potential opportunities for leveraging trade to benefit the regional economy. She highlighted the encouraging increase in trade exports post-pandemic, noting that momentum has returned to the regions. However, she also pointed out the ongoing disparity between the higher volume of exports in the South of the UK compared to the North.
Leeds Beckett BA (Hons) International Business students at MemberCon25
Throughout the day, students had the opportunity to attend sessions on post-Brexit customs procedures, sustainable supply chains, overcoming trade barriers with the EU, and understanding rules of origin and tariffs. These sessions provided valuable insights into the complexities of global trade. Ezaan Hussain, one of the attending students, found particular value in the session on sustainable supply chains:
"MemberCon25 gave me a glimpse into the world of trade. I particularly enjoyed the session on sustainable supply chains, as it directly linked to my degree modules. I gained insightful knowledge from industry speakers about future trends in global business. I’m incredibly grateful for this opportunity, as it also proved to be a great networking experience that will benefit my future career!"
For many students, the conference provided a first-hand look at the practical applications of their studies. Myer Burrell reflected on how the event broadened her understanding:
"Prior to the conference, I felt I had little understanding of the practical business applications related to export and trade. However, the event provided an invaluable opportunity for me and my peers to expand our knowledge. It was inspiring to see and hear from so many female speakers working in senior trade positions across various organisations. MemberCon25 was an amazing opportunity for networking and learning."
Beyond the panel discussions, students were also able to engage with industry professionals and explore different career pathways. Ashley Dutu found the behind-the-scenes insights particularly eye-opening:
"It was interesting to gain insight into how companies operate behind the scenes and how products are shipped globally. Key discussions included the UK’s efforts to restore trust with the EU and the integration of sustainability into supply chains when trading or exporting goods. MemberCon25 was an eye-opening experience into this whole industry."
For some attendees, the conference was directly relevant to their own entrepreneurial ambitions. Allan Sanca Gomes, a business owner himself, found the discussions on supply chain management especially valuable:
"MemberCon25 expanded my knowledge of how the UK is operating post-Brexit. I particularly enjoyed the session on international supply chains and the importance of building strong relationships with suppliers while understanding manufacturing procedures. This information was especially useful for me as a business owner."
By attending MemberCon25, students not only deepened their understanding of international trade but also had the opportunity to network with industry professionals, explore career opportunities, and gain first-hand knowledge of the challenges and opportunities in the field. The BA (Hons) International Business course is accredited by the Institute of Export & International Trade (IOE&IT).
