A Day in the Life of a Leeds Beckett Law School student
Ever wondered what it’s really like to be a student here at Leeds Law School at Leeds Beckett University?
You might have done your research online, had a peek at our social media channels, looked at university reviews and maybe even visited us at an open day - but we know how helpful it can be to hear from current students who are living and breathing the university experience right now.
Second year student ,Tahrem Tania, joined the LLB Law course in September 2020. She walks us through a day in her life at Leeds Law School in December 2021.
Morning routine
I wake up at 7:00, do my morning prayers, have breakfast and get ready for uni.
I get the bus to Huddersfield train station at around 8:00, where I catch a train to Leeds, arriving at around 9am. Sometimes I finish some of my uni work on the train, or make a to do list for the day or week, on my phone notes or on paper. I make sure my list is realistic - don’t stress yourself with unattainable goals.
Once I’m in Leeds, I either take the bus or walk to the city campus. It usually takes me 15-20 minutes to get there.
Arriving at city campus
I head to a café to do work because my first lesson starts at 12:00. I sometimes like to get out of the uni environment to de-stress.
I try to have breaks every hour or so. If there’s something I don’t understand, I will have a short break and clear my head and then attempt it again. Then before my 12-noon seminar, I eat my lunch either in the uni café or outside the uni.
A lunchtime seminar
I attend a 90 minute Medical Law face-to-face seminar. We go over the work we were asked to do and sometimes do exam questions.
Meeting up with friends
I meet up with my friends as I have a break until 15:00. I go to the faith space to do my prayers. We have lunch if we haven’t eaten or we talk. We go to finish off some uni work together in the quiet study space in the library.
Mid-afternoon seminar
I have a Property Law seminar at 15:00. We work in groups to answer some of the research questions that were set for seminar preparation work. This is usually a word document and can be found on MyBeckett. It tells you what you need to do, such as watch the pre-recorded lectures, do some reading and attempt the questions set. In the seminar, the tutor will go over the seminar preparation and begin to answer scenario-based questions.
Today I was quite stuck on understanding a case and a principle, so my tutor used an example to help me understand it. I now make my own examples and ask her if they relate with the topic. She’s really helped me with property law because I haven’t done the topic before, but she’s made it much easier for me. All the tutors here are so knowledgeable and helpful, nothing is too much trouble.
Winding down
I finish at 16:30 and I do my prayers and then travel back home by train and bus. On the train, I finish off some uni work and wind down. When I get home, I make dinner, watch something and then do some uni work. I try not to do work after 5pm as it’s my relaxing time.
Tomorrow I’m attending a walk organised by the Outdoor Society, so I prepare for that. I’ve been doing 8-10 mile walks with them on weekends, and made lots of friends through it; it’s really helped me with my mental health. I’ve also been helping out with the Christmas Café organised by the University’s global officers, which has given me confidence and allowed me to get to know more people outside my course.
It’s been a good day and now I’m ready for bed!
