Tiled background

The National Student Survey (NSS) gives all students across the country the chance to speak out about their higher education experience. We use the survey findings to make measurable improvements to how we do things at Leeds Beckett.

In response to student feedback from last year’s survey, we introduced nine improvements to make life better for students at Leeds Law School.

You said…you wanted credits to help with the cost of printing

We have pledged to provide all students with £10 worth of printer credit at the start of this semester. That’s equivalent to 250 single-sided sheets of A4 paper.

You said… you wanted the option for printed module workbooks

As a university, we are working hard on our sustainability goals, with the aim to reduce our carbon emissions to zero by 2030. However, we will be providing printer credit for all students, so those students who wish to have a printed workbook can use part of their credit for this purpose.

You said…you wanted the option to attend classes online

The Law School has provided large group sessions (LGSs) and seminars via online platforms, as well as on campus.

You said…you wanted live large group sessions for all students on a module

In 2020-21, we introduced large group sessions for all students on a module. They provide opportunities to go through past exam questions, consolidate the material, and to delve deeper into a module.  After being so well received, these sessions have been retained in this academic year and are delivered live, on campus and online, in addition to recorded lectures.

You said…you wanted more contact with your academic adviser

We’ve increased communication. During semester one induction, academic advisers contacted each and every one of their students by phone to check in for the start of the year. Tutors also now regularly email students, who actively participate during sessions, to praise them for their contributions.

You said…you wanted a consistent format for modules on MyBeckett

We introduced this for the start of this academic year.  All modules now follow a consistent Leeds Law School template which aids navigation and helps students to find their materials easily.

You said…you wanted induction to be timetabled in a more student-friendly fashion

We arranged an online induction day during semester one, where a number of support staff and other useful student services colleagues (for example, Careers and Disability Advice) delivered sessions for students.  Holding all these sessions on the same day and via an online space facilitated student attendance and engagement.

You said…you wanted a more student-friendly timetable

We have worked closely with the timetabling team to ensure that sessions are ‘blocked’ as much as possible, and that students do not have large gaps during a teaching day.  In addition, every student has at least one teaching-free day per week, often two.

You said…you wanted meaningful feedback on your formative assessments

For the majority of modules, the formative assessment now directly feeds into the summative assessment, meaning that the formative feedback will be directly relevant to your summative.

If you are a student with a suggestion on how we can improve your experience at Leeds Law School, please email david.norris@leedsbeckett.ac.uk. Thank you.
