Postcards from Mauritius: Leeds Law School students study abroad

When two students from Leeds Law School were given an opportunity to take part in an exchange programme with Rushmore Business School, swapping Leeds for Mauritius for a semester, Imogen Smith and Chanzi Silumbwe both jumped at the chance to study law abroad for five months, between January and May 2023. This is their story.

Imogen's experience

“I initially saw the exchange being advertised in an email. When I found out it was for one semester, I knew that it would be perfect for me as I didn’t want a full year abroad.

“I then enquired about the exchange and got the option to go to Botswana or Mauritius. After researching Mauritius, the beautiful beaches and island life called me, and I knew that was where I wanted to be.

“The exchange programme involved a singular credited semester of three modules. I completed two mandatory modules, as well as a chosen module: Civil Code 1, which explores the basics of the Mauritian Constitution."

“This module allowed me to learn more about Mauritius and its history. The exchange also involved exploring the island and getting to know the culture.

“The exchange has enhanced my learning experience hugely. Rushmore Business School is a small university where everyone knows each other very well. I found this personal touch helped me feel more comfortable to ask questions in my lectures that I wouldn’t usually ask. Taking this into my third year, I will be less hesitant to ask more questions.

"The confidence I now have to put myself in uncomfortable situations will help me do the same in the workplace" - Imogen Smith.

“Throughout the exchange, I had to reach out to many people in a professional manner, which has given me confidence in all social settings. The confidence I now have to put myself in uncomfortable situations will help me do the same within the workplace.

“Taking part in exchange also demonstrates how dedicated I am to employers.

“The exchange allowed me to experience another culture in a raw and personal way. This was my first time living abroad and naively I thought it would be similar to a holiday, but the truth was far from that.

“Coming out of this semester has now changed my attitude towards my education, living conditions and relationships with my friends and professionals.”

Chanzi's experience

“The exchange to Mauritius provided me with a new understanding of the law and helped me gain awareness of a different culture. I also got to interact with different students and tutors and build new friendships with them.

“Taking part in this experience will help me to stand out when applying for jobs in law. As an international student from Zambia, I now have educational experience from the UK, Mauritius and Zambia, making me a more interesting applicant to employers."

“The learning materials, delivery methods and assessments at Rushmore Business School are the same as those provided by Leeds Beckett, and the lecturers make it easy to understand the more challenging aspects of law school.

"I got to go on different adventures while studying in Mauritius because the island has so much to offer away from the education side of things.”

"Taking part in this experience will help me to stand out when applying for jobs in law" - Chanzi Silumbwe.
