Kitty Lambert

Kitty Lambert joined the LLB (Hons) Law degree at Leeds Beckett in 2019, before progressing to the LLM Legal Practice Course. She will graduate in January 2024 with the vocational qualification of the LPC, as well as a Master of Laws.

Course(s): LLB (Hons) Law, LLM Legal Practice Course

Kitty has maximised her time at university with a whole range of extra-curricular activities, and this July, she will join a small group of students who have been selected to take part in our Street Law initiative, this time spending a month in New York.

Kitty remembers three extra-curricular experiences that have stood out during her time at Leeds Beckett.

I became the LGB+ Community Leader at the Leeds Beckett Students’ Union

My undergraduate experience was hindered a little due to the pandemic, so as soon as things opened up and I started my LPC, I threw myself into everything that I could.

I’ve always loved Leeds because it’s such a vibrant city and full of opportunity, and I was attracted to Leeds Law School because of how career-focussed the courses are and the emphasis that is placed on extra-curricular activities.

I got involved with the Students’ Union and was elected as the LGB+ Community Leader for a year. I made so many friends and connections in this role and it really took me out of my comfort zone.

It was rewarding to help students find a sense of belonging at university, and I enjoyed organising socials and having a presence at big university events, such as the Freshers Fair.

I went to Auschwitz

In May this year, I was lucky enough to travel to Auschwitz with the Students’ Union as part of the ‘Lessons From Auschwitz’ initiative, which is all about reducing antisemitism in universities.

It was a harrowing experience, but really important, and now my learnings from the trip will help the university implement support programmes for our Jewish student communities.

I’m heading to New York in July

I recently took part in the brilliant Street Law programme at Leeds Law School, where we got to visit sixth form colleges around Yorkshire and Greater Manchester to give students lessons on how to stay safe on social media.

That has now led to four of us being selected to go to New York for a month in July, where we’ll teach law at an urban law-themed high school in the Bronx.

The programme is designed to help students develop an understanding of the law, the legal process, power and justice. This will give them basic legal literacy, which will ultimately help them throughout their lives.

What’s next?

I strongly believe that the extra-curricular activities I’ve been fortunate enough to get involved in at Leeds Law School have broadened my horizons and will be of significant interest to future employers.

I am now equipped with additional skills and interests that I will carry forwards into my legal career. My ambition is to work as a solicitor in the criminal sector, as I want to continue making a difference to the lives of others.

I have felt myself grow so much, both personally and professionally, whilst studying the LPC at Leeds Law School. Whilst I feel sad to be leaving, I am excited to start the next chapter of my life.
