In July 2025, 17 Leeds Beckett Law School students had the unique opportunity to take part in a subsidised study trip to Botswana. The visit combined academic learning with rich cultural experiences, giving students the chance to broaden their horizons while developing their understanding of law in an international context.
During the trip, students attended classes at Gaborone University College of Law and Professional Studies, where they explored the similarities and differences between law in Botswana and the UK. They also visited the university's law clinic, gaining insight into its vital work supporting local communities.
Alongside their academic studies, students engaged directly with legal professionals in Botswana. They visited a local law firm, listened to a talk from a human rights lawyer and toured the High Court of Botswana where they met judges and learned about the country's judicial system.

Raiza Munemo, a first year LLB (Hons) Law student, said: "Being part of a team that visited Botswana was the best thing that happened to me this year. Gaining insight on how Botswana's legal system integrates tradition and modern law and witnessing the High Court in action amplified my admiration of justice as a dynamic, changing system. And yet I struggled to reconcile with the nation's imposition of the death penalty and was reminded that justice is always multifaceted and that values can deviate radically from society to society."

The trip was not only about law, but also about experiencing Botswana's rich culture and natural beauty. Students visited the Mokolodi Nature Reserve, took part in a bush dinner and safari at Manong Game Lodge, and tried their hand at pottery with a local maker. A visit to the crocodile pools offered another unforgettable experience.

Perhaps most meaningful for many was the time spent at SOS Children's Village, where students played with local children and donated toys.

Raiza added: "Visiting SOS Children's Village was an unforgettable and relatable moment where we engaged with the kids through play; and reiterated that the law always triumphs to those who cannot safeguard themselves.
"The cultural aspect of the trip proved as compelling as the learning of law. From safaris through to interacting with people, every moment left a lasting admiration about resilience and humanity and the unseen work behind every success.
"The visit to the Pottery village reminded me that we often undergo resistance, forbearance, and commitment before we are transformed into something wonderful; our worth isn't lessened simply because others cannot yet fully appreciate us."
Leeds Law School is committed to providing students with opportunities to develop global perspectives and practical experiences beyond the classroom. Trips like this not only enhance students' academic studies but also give them skills and memories that will last a lifetime.
