Tell us a bit about yourself and why you chose to study law at Leeds Beckett?

I’m originally from Toronto, Canada and I’m currently studying the LLB (Hons) Law Senior Status programme at Leeds Beckett University. Before coming to the UK, I completed a Bachelor of Arts in Legal Studies at the University of Waterloo, where I developed a strong interest in law and the legal system. I also gained practical experience working in legal offices in Ontario, which further motivated me to pursue a legal career.

One of the main reasons I chose Leeds Beckett was the opportunity to join the first cohort of the LLB Senior Status programme. Being a part of this has been incredibly rewarding, as it feels like we are helping shape a new pathway for future students. Studying law in the UK has also allowed me to gain a different perspective on legal systems while learning in a diverse and supportive academic environment.

How have you found your course so far? What have been the highlights?

The course has been both challenging and incredibly rewarding. Coming from a legal studies background in Canada, it has been exciting to deepen my understanding of the UK legal system and develop stronger analytical and legal reasoning skills.

One of the biggest highlights has been the support from my lecturers. They genuinely recognise students’ progress and take the time to acknowledge when you are doing well, which makes the learning environment very motivating. It’s clear they want students to succeed and are always willing to offer guidance, feedback and encouragement.

I’ve also really enjoyed the seminar discussions, where we analyse legal problems and debate different perspectives. I have a strong appreciation for how the English common law system operates, and I am able to recognise and analyse the similarities and differences in how it is applied within the Canadian legal system.

What support have you received during your time at Leeds Law School?

As an international student, the support at Leeds Law School has made a big difference to my experience. The lecturers are approachable and genuinely invested in helping students succeed. They provide clear guidance on coursework, legal research, exam preparation, and seminars offer a great opportunity to ask questions and receive constructive feedback.

Beyond the classroom, the wider university community has also been very supportive. Being involved in student groups such as the Law Society and the Buddy Scheme has allowed me to connect with other students and build a strong sense of community within the law school.

These opportunities have helped me settle into life in Leeds while also supporting my academic development. The balance of academic guidance and peer support has made my experience both positive and rewarding.

Are there any extra-curricular/career opportunities that you have got involved with?

Alongside my studies, I’ve been involved in several extracurricular and professional opportunities that have enriched my experience at Leeds Beckett. I am a member of the Law Society and Legal Ladies, where I’ve attended networking events and had the opportunity to connect with legal professionals and fellow students interested in pursuing careers in law. I also take part in the university’s Buddy Scheme, where I help support incoming law students as they transition into university life.

In addition, I work as a Global Ambassador for Leeds Beckett, representing the university and sharing my experience with prospective international students. Outside of the university, I recently began working as a Pilates instructor in Leeds, which has been a rewarding way to stay connected to my interest in health and wellness while developing leadership and communication skills in a completely different environment.

What would you say to people considering studying your course at Leeds Beckett?

I would encourage anyone considering the LLB Senior Status at Leeds Beckett to take advantage of the supportive and engaging environment the law school offers. The course is academically challenging but designed to help students develop strong legal skills such as critical thinking, research, and problem-solving.

One of the things that stands out most is how interactive the learning experience is. Seminars encourage open discussion and allow students to apply legal principles to real-world scenarios, which makes the material much more engaging. Beyond the classroom, there are many opportunities to get involved in societies, networking events, and leadership roles. Overall, it’s a great environment to grow academically, professionally, and personally while preparing for a career in law.
