Pre-arrival new and international students

New Students:

Study Ready is an introductory module covering four main areas: Learning and Assessment at Leeds Beckett, Becoming an Independent Learner, Undergraduate Academic Skills, Your Learning and Your Wellbeing. This can be accessed before students enrol at the University.

 

International Students:

International Students’ Academic Introduction (ISAI) Module

This three-unit module provides practical information and academic skills guidance to support international students’ transition to UK University study. Content will be available to view from mid-August and it is promoted again in January for Semester Two starters.

 

New international students will be automatically enrolled on the module in MyBeckett. The module includes a range of interactive activities accompanied by a series of live webinars:

  • Unit 1 – Becoming a Leeds Beckett Student
  • Unit 2 – How we Learn and Study at LBU
  • Unit 3 – Building your Academic and Study Skills

The module can be found in the module list as 01518 International Students' Academic Introduction and remains in MyBeckett for late arrivals to access, or for other international students to revisit as required. Returning international students are directed to the Study Smart modules (see below).

New Undergraduate Students and Degree Apprentices

First Year Study Smart and Undergraduate Degree Apprentices' Study Smart are MyBeckett induction modules for first year undergraduates, and tailored for degree apprentices, consisting of three units:

  • Getting Started: includes IT set-up, using MyBeckett, using the Library, support for disabled students, and key sources of help across Library and Student Services and the Students' Union.
  • Key Study Skills: includes information about how students are taught and learn at Leeds Beckett, including managing workload and looking after wellbeing.
  • Research and Writing: takes students through the steps of working through an assessment. This section also includes information about submission and Turnitin.

Second year / level 5 students

Second Year Study Smart is an induction / refresher module in MyBeckett for students progressing into their second year of undergraduate studies (L4 to L5). It consists of four units:

  • Welcome Back: includes information on the differences in expectations for L5 work and how students can reflect on and use feedback from L4 to improve their studies.
  • Skills for Second Year Assignments: includes a refresher on using information resources, critical thinking and reading skills, and academic integrity (including referencing).
  • Managing your Second Year: includes information on time management, wellbeing and achievement, and where to find help.
  • Next Steps: includes information on careers and employability as well as sources of further support.

Final year / level 6 students

Final Year Study Smart is an induction / refresher module in MyBeckett for students progressing into their final year of undergraduate studies (L5 to L6), with a particular emphasis on dissertation/project support. It consists of five units:

  • Your Final Year: includes information about expectations, meeting the demands of final year study and thinking about careers and employability.
  • Your Independent Project: includes key terminology, what makes a good project, and how to successfully manage workload.
  • Developing an Project: includes understanding the requirements, undertaking a literature review, reading and effective note-making, referencing, and narrowing/refining your project.
  • Your Project Research:includes approaches and research methods, time management, doing the research, and analyses and interpretation.
  • Writing your Project: includes writing and redrafting, language and style, and submitting.

Placement students may also find it useful to take this module or the Level 4 to 5 transition module on their return to full-time study.

Taught postgraduate students

Postgraduate Study Smart is a MyBeckett induction module aimed at new postgraduate students (taught programmes), consisting of three units:

  • Getting Started: includes IT set-up, using MyBeckett, using the Library, support for disabled students, and key sources of help across Library and Student Services and the Students' Union.
  • Postgraduate Study: includes how postgraduate studies are different than undergraduate studies, the difference in learning outcomes, and independent learning.
  • Research and Writing: which covers key research and academic skills for postgraduate students, information on referencing, and moving on to research degrees.

There is also a customised Postgraduate Degree Apprentices' Study Smart module.

All students

Our Academic Honesty tutorial is accessible from the Modules list in MyBeckett and explains what academic honesty is, including university guidelines, referencing, and sources of support. Aimed at all levels of study and at staff who are new to the university it consists of four units:

  • Academic Honesty at Leeds Beckett: explains university regulations and processes.
  • What is academic honesty?: explains what is included within academic honesty, poor practice (including an expansion of information around cheating, including contract cheating and online exams), and detection and Turnitin.

  • Good Academic Practice: includes information about using artificial intelligence, paraphrasing, good notetaking, working with others, and referencing.

  • Academic Honesty Support: including self-study materials, workshops, one-to-one support and what to do if things go wrong.
