How businesses are helping students gain skills
This summer, Beckett Careers collaborated with three business partners to deliver our Summer Development Programme to support students in gaining industry experience and developing their skills to jumpstart a career in the digital space. Find out more in this post by Mike Hall - Careers and Employability Engagement Consultant at LBU.
The Summer Development Programme focused on Coding and AI, Social Media Marketing and Digital Communications. Each programme involved a series of extra-curricular training sessions and interactive workshops with industry experts that inspired our students to consider their career options and navigate the transition into the professional world.
AI For All was delivered by Frame, a digital agency at the forefront of AI and Data Training and delivery. On the AI for All course, students learned the fundamentals of programming before moving onto data analysis and prediction, covering a diverse range of topics from data cleaning, statistical modelling and machine learning. The course was open to students from any degree subject and saw students from Business, Law and Biomedical Sciences take their first steps in learning how to code and develop AI generators.
The Shoo Academy saw us work with long time partners SHOO Social Media, a marketing consultancy that delivers the best data-led advertising campaigns for a range of clients. Drawing on their knowledge and experience within the digital marketing industry the SHOO Academy is a nine-step programme that enabled students to have 100% confidence in developing an online marketing strategy setting them up for roles within the digital marketing sector, whether they were from a marketing background or not.
Communication is consistently identified as a top requirement of graduate employers and the Mindless Academy focused on the development of digital communication skills that are essential for roles across multiple sectors. Over a four-week programme, students undertook virtual work experience and writing assignments designed to give them the mindset, skills and experience needed to thrive in their careers.
These extra-curricular programmes provided students with a deeper understanding of these growing industries and enabled them to consider the different career options available within them with valuable experience and knowledge. For our business partners it was an opportunity to contribute to the development of our talented students and prepare them for professional employment.
Following the completion of the programmes 100% of students described their experience as Excellent or Very Good with one student describing how AI For All would ‘boost the learning experience for future students as it blends academic knowledge with industry practices’.
