Our new Biomedical Sciences teaching laboratory will help equip students for the workplace
The School of Health is set to create an additional state-of-the-art Biomedical Sciences teaching laboratory.
Leeds Beckett University has provided £7 million of funding towards a new Clinical and Multiprofessional Skills Suite and further Biomedical Sciences teaching laboratory. This is in addition to the £2 million funding that the School of Health has recently secured from the Office for Students.
This investment will make sure ensure that our student community has the opportunity to access the specialist teaching facilities needed for their profession and will benefit students on a range of courses throughout the school.
The Biomedical Sciences teaching laboratory will house a 60-person laboratory, a tissue culture site and new state-of-the-art equipment. With a dedicated preparation area, walk-in chemical stores and cold room, the laboratory will be used for lab-based teaching but will also provide a space for students to contribute to the ever-growing research base in the school through their independent research projects.
Dr Jim Boyne, Head of Subject for Biomedical Sciences, said: “Our Biomedical Sciences courses include extensive training in a diverse range of practical techniques. The new Biomedical Sciences teaching laboratory being built at City Campus will provide our students with a state-of-the-art space to undertake their laboratory work.
“The laboratory will house new equipment to support all aspects of our practical teaching. This includes the latest technologies, such as an imaging flow cytometer, providing students with access to cutting-edge equipment for their research projects.
“We cannot wait to welcome our students into this fantastic new space!“
The facility will also be used by students studying Dietetics, Environmental Health and Nutrition. Head of subject Dr Helen White added: “ The advantages this can offer for confidence and practice of skills is huge. Having these additional spaces gives us the ability to offer more practical based learning that can only advantage our students in the workplace.”
Our new Biomedical Sciences teaching laboratory is expected to be complete in August 2022.
