I’m a second year sociology student at LBU with an interest in philosophy and gothic architecture. I’m an avid reader and enjoy walking around bookshops in Leeds. I love the works of Albert Camus and when I’ve not got my nose in a book, I’m usually volunteering with organisations on causes that I believe to be important.
Tell us a bit about yourself and what drew you to Sociology?
I’ve always been interested in the social sciences, specifically psychology. I plan on studying further to become a psychologist so I was looking for a course that would enable me to make that first step. When I discovered the option of studying both sociology and psychology I was thrilled, because having studied sociology for my GCSEs, I knew it would be an enjoyable experience. It was great because a joint honours degree also means you’re never bored, you’re never studying the same things over and over, and you’re completely engaged in your coursework. Since I’m also involved in volunteer activities and love learning more about the interrelation of sociology and psychology in everyday life, it was the perfect fit for me.
What made you choose Leeds Beckett?
While affordability always had a role to play in my choice of university, the testimonials I read of LBU in particular were positive and made me want to apply. I was impressed with the student satisfaction rates and the quality of the modules delivered, and in all my thorough research into whether I should apply, I never encountered a complaint about the standard of education provided. I was able to preview the modules that were offered ahead of applying, and the choices available looked well-structured and interesting. As an international student, I also wanted to study in a vibrant city that reflected the typical experience of university life in the UK, and Leeds seemed a great option for that.
What has been your favourite thing about your time studying at Leeds Beckett?
Out of the many things I appreciate about studying at Leeds Beckett, the library is one of my favourites. Apart from an easily accessible service that lets you know where to find the book you’re looking for, the staff at the library are incredibly helpful and supportive. You could spend an entire day in there without feeling the least discomfort, especially when preparing for upcoming assessments. I also find the IT facilities available in the library (and almost everywhere else throughout campus) handy, especially the laptop borrowing service that lets you work on a university laptop and return it by the end of the day. The academic librarians assigned to each course are brilliant at what they do and, as a whole, having spent most of my time in the library during my first year at LBU, I can say it’s one of the best places on campus.
What advice would you give someone thinking about studying this course?
I would advise them to go for it, because it’s a well-structured, relevant course with aspects that can be applied to everyday life. I’ve found that the course can be challenging at times but since the module tutors are always available to help with any difficulties you may have, you can’t really go wrong by choosing it. There’s also the fact that the course material sets a foundation on which to base your further studies and, if you’re interested in a career in social services or any of the social sciences, this is a good starting point. Although it also depends on how the student handles the course themselves, I feel that objectively, I can’t find much reason not to recommend the Sociology and Psychological Studies course to a potential student.
