Alumni Spotlight: Feeling supported throughout my postgrad journey

International graduate Victoria, from the Germany, tells us about why she chose Leeds Beckett for her postgraduate degree in International Relations and how the university supported her journey.

What were you doing before becoming a postgraduate student?

Finishing my Bachelors Degree in Regional Studies China and Business Administration in Cologne, Germany and working for a large and important German political foundation as a research assistant in the Asia-Pacific Department.

What reasons motivated you to consider studying a postgraduate course?

I wanted to increase my career opportunities and gaining an international Master’s Degree would help me with achieving that.

Why did you choose to study your postgraduate degree at Leeds Beckett University?

Leeds Beckett is one the best places to study International Relations and because the fees were affordable for my situation I decided this would be the best place to study.

What were the challenges or obstacles you had to overcome to become a postgraduate student?

Paying the tuition fees was a little difficult but I managed to make it through with support from the university and finding a course that tied in with my previous studies and work experience was an important factor for me.

How would you describe your experience as a postgraduate student and what was the highlight?

I got support from everyone at the university and I felt very valued. I enjoyed the close relations with the teaching staff and the appealing course content. My highlight was definitely being part of the amazing graduation ceremony in July 2023.

How would you describe the University's facilities, teaching staff and employability and support services?

The university facilities are very new modern and classic at the same time. I really enjoyed being there. The teaching staff were a great help and friendly all the time. The employability and support services were also a big plus!

What role did your fellow students play in your experience at Leeds Beckett?

As I did an distance learning program I didn’t get the chance to be surrounded by many fellow students during my studies. However, what I witnessed was a great and strong community.

Did you receive any support from the university, before, during, or after your course, and how did it help you?

Yes, I received tremendous support from the university before, during and after my course. It made me feel comfortable and to be in good hands throughout my time studying at Leeds Beckett made my experience better.

How has postgraduate study benefitted your career? What impact have you experienced after your course?

My postgraduate course benefited me in many ways. I can request a higher total income due to having more experience from studying here and I now hold a deeper understanding of my studied field. I regularly experience appreciation and admiration for my postgraduate studies.

Would you recommend postgraduate study at Leeds Beckett? Please explain.

I would for sure recommend postgraduate study at Leeds Beckett as it is a very reputable university offering important and interesting courses. The staff is interdisciplinary, and Leeds felt like a great city to live and study. What Leeds has to offer besides studying during your leisure time is great and fun!

What advice would you give to someone considering postgraduate study at Leeds Beckett?

Don’t fear to ask questions, participate in university and leisure activities, connect with people from all over the world and build good and strong connections to your fellow students and teaching staff.
