MSc Speech & Language Therapy alum Helen tells us where her course has taken her and what she most enjoyed about studying it at Leeds Beckett.
Course: MSc Speech & Language Therapy
Tell us a bit about yourself and what you've been doing since you graduated?
Since Graduating I have been working as a therapist for LINGO, an independent Speech and Language Therapy (SaLT) company based in Halifax.
We go into schools and support them to identify, assess needs and run interventions with children, but we also to work at a universal level to support and upskill staff too which means we can increase the impact of our work.
What have been the highlights of your career so far?
My highlights so far are: working in an amazing team, being on the front line and supporting school staff to be more confident, and having an impact on children's communication.
Tell us about your job, what does this entail and did studying at Leeds Beckett help you get there?
I work with children with speech, language and communication needs to help them become successful communicators. Sometimes that can be children with stammers, speech difficulties, or difficulties in developing language.
My MSc gave me hands-on experience and the evidence behind the practice that I use on a daily basis.
How has your experience studying at Leeds Beckett influenced you and your career?
My course gave me a wide range of experiences to support my decision making in terms of what areas I wanted to work in as the Speech and Language profession is very wide ranging from adult stroke patients to newborn feeding.
What attracted you to study your course at Leeds Beckett University?
It was local and it enabled me to get the support and hands on experience I needed. It was also a shorter course than doing a full BSc as I already had an undergraduate degree in Linguistics.
What did you enjoy about your course and what advice would you give someone thinking about studying this course?
The variety of areas you can work in is great. I hadn't appreciated it before starting the course but there's something there for everyone.
What's next for you?
I am now working as a Band 6 on an Early Years Talking Time research project with the University of Oxford. I am working with nurseries to deliver CPD to staff and run interventions with their little ones. Very exciting.
