If you are planning on studying in Leeds, then you will benefit from living in one of the UK’s most exciting cities. You certainly won’t get bored in between lectures because Leeds offers plenty to see and do. While you are studying in Leeds, you might as well take advantage of all the activities on offer and amazing sights to see. As a student we always look for things that won't hurt our budgets so I have gathered together the best free activities to do in Leeds, without breaking the bank. There are plenty of fun things to do in and around this fascinating city without spending a penny.

Enjoy free galleries & museums in Leeds

There are several free art galleries in Leeds that you can visit if you want to experience some of its artistic and cultural treasures. Why not peruse Leeds Art Gallery's excellent collection of British 20th-century art or The Tetley, a complex of more modern art galleries located in a former brewery. Take your passion for art outdoors to the wonderful Yorkshire Sculpture Park, which is another fantastic free thing to do in Leeds if the weather is nice. As an alternative, you can take one of Leeds' many free art trails!

As well as the arts, you can also enjoy lots of historical culture in the city, and that doesn't have to break the bank either. There are many free museums in Leeds, but my favourites are Leeds City Museum and the Leeds Discovery Centre.

Get outdoors with Leeds' park and nature trails

When looking for free things to do in Leeds, a good idea is to have an adventure in the great outdoors. Leeds is known for its fantastic selection of beautiful free parks and nature trails. Whenever I feel stressed, I go out to visit the park near me because outdoor activity is the ultimate de-stressor. There are plenty of options to choose from, but I’d recommend Golden Acre Park, Roundhay Park, and Horsforth Hall Park as some of the best parks in Leeds. Other great places for a family-friendly walk include: along the Leeds & Liverpool canal, one of many Leeds nature trails, or even the Leeds Owl Trail!

Kirkstall Abbey

This is a landmark you must see at some point during your time in Leeds. Kirkstall Abbey is home to the ruins of a breath taking 12th century Abbey. This is a completely free attraction, and a great opportunity to see a piece of the city's history for yourself. You can enjoy the Abbey's parkland setting next to the River Aire, take a walk along the river or enjoy a picnic on the spacious grounds. There is also a small playground near to the car park for the little ones to enjoy.

Read a book at Leeds Central Library

Leeds Central Library is a cosy place to spend a few hours reading a book on a rainy day. The library has two floors with plenty of books and a research library to explore. However, one of the best things to do is visit the Tiled Hall Café which connects the library with Leeds Art Gallery. Libraries have always made me feel relaxed. At first I felt overwhelmed by the sheer number of books surrounding me, knowing I can’t possibly read them all. Now I am always excited to grab new book and get stuck in. Another fun thing you can do is play chess outside Leeds Central Library. You need to check out the huge chessboard and pieces outside Leeds Library. The library porters put out the pieces every morning, so you can turn up there and start a game with your friend.

Overall, Leeds has many free attractions in the city. If you’re in Leeds in November and December, you can also enjoy seeing the Christmas decorations and displays across the city. However, regardless of the season, make sure to check the Leeds event calendar as most of the events are for free!
