If you're planning on spending a year or more in the UK, or even just a few months, figuring out what to bring can be a real headache. And, let's be real, the excitement of studying abroad makes students forget about making a solid packing list. But, remember, since you cannot go home whenever you feel like it, this is your one chance to get it right.

In your carry-on luggage

Different airlines and different countries have their own requirements and restrictions so make sure to check with your airline about what you need to present to them before your flight. For your convenience, you may want to put the following in your hand luggage:

  • Flight ticket / flight booking (electronic or printed)
  • Passport(s)
  • Valuables (wallet, phone, earphones, charger, etc.)
  • Mini toiletries (alcohol, wipes, tissue etc.)
  • Important documents
  • A small amount of UK sterling pounds for initial expenses (for food, taxi, etc.)
Do note that the amount of cash you can take with you, UK customs require travellers to declare cash of £10,000 or more. To know more about it, click here.

Clothing

Don't worry too much about packing the perfect wardrobe as that’s just impossible. But you should still make sure to bring enough clothes for the trip. Also, you never know what kind of weather you'll get in the UK so it’s best to bring with you a variety of light clothes that you can layer up if needed. There are a lot of places to shop at once you get here, so it won’t be much of a problem if you think you haven’t packed enough.

Toiletries and personal items

Naturally, you'll want to bring your toiletries with you, especially those that aren't available in the UK. While you can find most products here, it's best to bring your favourites from home. Some things that you might consider include:

  • Skin care essentials (face & body)
  • Hair essentials (comb, shampoo, conditioner, hair clips etc.)
  • Cosmetics
  • First aid kid
  • Vitamins / supplements
  • Medication

Electronics

Taking some small electronics from home is a good idea if you're heading to the UK as you'll likely need some electronic gadgets. Just be careful when packing them so they don’t break. In fact, airlines don’t allow most electronics in the check-in luggage. You might want to bring the following:

  • Mobile phone with charger
  • Laptop with charger
  • Camera
  • Headphones

The UK government has set some limitations on what can be brought into the UK. To find out what is allowed and what is prohibited, check out their guide. Also, be sure to keep an eye on your baggage weight limit!

Items you might not need

However, you might also end up packing things you think you’ll need but won’t use in the end so learn from me reconsider bringing the following:

  • Heavy winter coats
  • Light footwear
  • Plug adapters
  • Travel guidebook
  • Home identification cards
  • Kitchen items

So that’s it for your checklist. Good luck on your journey!
