How to enjoy winter in Leeds

Hi! Sana here, Project Management student at Leeds Beckett! I wanted to talk to you about my top tips to better enjoy winters in Leeds.

Moving from the sun-drenched plains of Islamabad to the chilly streets of Leeds can be a shock to the system, especially when winter arrives. Coming from Pakistan, I wasn't sure what to expect from a winter in Leeds. Would I be shivering in my shalwar kameez, yearning for sunshine? Would I miss the vibrant hustle and bustle of Islamabad? Well, let me tell you, winter in Leeds has been a surprisingly delightful experience. Adjusting to life in a new climate can be an adventure, and with the right preparation and a bit of grit, you'll be sipping chai and enjoying the snowy landscapes in no time.

Layering up and cosy spots

The first thing I learned is to embrace the layers. Gone are the days of single shalwar kameez. I've invested in warm thermal leggings, cosy sweaters, and a good quality coat that can handle the wind and occasional snow. Pro tip: don't forget a scarf and gloves.

Leeds is full of charming cafes and pubs with warm interiors and delicious treats. On a chilly day, there's nothing better than curling up with a hot chai latte and enjoying the company of friends. Many cafes even have outdoor seating with heaters, making it perfect for people-watching while still feeling the winter air.

Festive markets

Winter in Leeds comes alive with festive markets. From the Christkindelmarkt in Millennium Square to the Leeds Kirkgate Market's Christmas offering, there's something for everyone.

The Christmas markets are a must-visit, with the beautiful decorations everywhere that start from November till the end of December and with stalls selling everything from food and drink to gifts and crafts. There are also plenty of festive events and activities taking place throughout the city, such as carol concerts and light shows. Soaking up this festive atmosphere is a truly magical experience.

Exploring Leeds and the cultural delights

Don't let the cold discourage you from exploring the great outdoors. Leeds has several parks perfect for a winter stroll, like Roundhay Park and Golden Acre Park. Wrap up warm and enjoy the crisp air, the crunch of snow under your boots, and the breath-taking views of the city. And if you're feeling adventurous, try ice skating at Millennium Square.

Leeds is a city that thrives on diversity, and winter is no exception. From the Leeds International Festival of Ideas to celebrating Diwali, there are countless opportunities to experience different cultures and traditions. Immerse yourself in music, dance, food, and festivities from around the world.

Home away from home

While winter in a new country can feel isolating, it's important to find ways to connect with your community. Leeds has many vibrant communities, and there are many traditional restaurants, where you can enjoy a warm meal of traditional food and shops where you can find familiar flavours and friendly faces. You can also join student societies or online groups to connect with your fellow country members.

Embrace the unexpected

Winter in Leeds can be unpredictable, with sunny days giving way to sudden snow showers. However, this is part of the charm of the season. Learn to embrace the unexpected, be prepared for anything, and enjoy the beauty of the changing landscape.

Remember, winter is not a time to hibernate indoors. It's an opportunity to experience a different side of Leeds, to discover new things about yourself, and to create lasting memories. So, put on your warmest clothes, grab a hot drink, and step out into the winter of Leeds. This blog is just a starting point for your winter adventures. With a little creativity and exploration, you can discover countless ways to enjoy the season in Leeds, even if you're used to the warmth of Pakistan. So, bundle up, step outside, and embrace the winter wonderland!
