Spending Christmas in my new home away from home
Hi there! My name is Krisha, and I'm studying MSc International Marketing at Leeds Beckett University. I am 23 years old and I have never celebrated any festival far from my family until now. Spending Christmas away from home has been an emotional rollercoaster—a mix of homesickness and heart-warming new experiences. In this blog, I’ll share my personal experience of staying in Leeds over the Christmas break, how I’ve managed to make the most of it, and some tips for anyone else spending the holidays away from home.
Home is where the heart is
Christmas at home has always been about family, traditions, and a warm sense of belonging. Being far away this year has been tough. I miss the cosy gatherings, familiar smells of festive food, and the laughter shared with loved ones. Seeing others reunite with their families has occasionally brought on pangs of homesickness. But these feelings have also deepened my appreciation for the small joys and new memories I’m creating here in Leeds.
One of the most comforting aspects of my time here has been the friendships I’ve formed. My friends and I have become each other’s support system, creating our own version of family celebrations. We’ve shared festive meals in great Christmas student discounts, exchanged thoughtful gifts, and explored the city together, making this Christmas feel special in its own way. It’s a beautiful reminder that family can be found wherever you have people who care for you.
A sparkling Leeds
Leeds transforms into a winter wonderland during Christmas! The city centre’s sparkling lights and decorations fill the streets with festive cheer. The Christmas markets are a must-visit—they’ve been a highlight of my season. From sampling international treats to sipping the most delightful hot chocolate, every moment has been magical. Walking through the beautifully lit streets, I’ve found a new appreciation for the city and its festive spirit. I do miss home but hadn't I left home, I wouldn't be able to witness the Christmas in Leeds.
As I walk from my home to university, I see people decorating their Christmas trees, offering pies and candies, hosting gatherings and there’s just this lovely and positive vibe which makes me want to roam outside the whole day. It feels like Christmas is sparkling everywhere, even the grocery stores, clubs and café ’s have been decorated and there are Christmas special food and drinks everywhere with great student deals. I don’t feel negative or lonely when I see all this. I also facetime my friends and family and show them the lit streets, and I feel that even am celebrating Christmas with them.
Despite the occasional loneliness, I’ve realized how grateful I am for this opportunity to experience Christmas in a new culture. It’s a chance to see the world from a different perspective, meet incredible people, and create my own traditions. Whether it’s trying mince pies for the first time or walking through beautifully lit streets, these moments remind me to cherish where I am and how far I’ve come. I am not used to this cold weather here but now I have also enjoyed and witnessed the first snowfall in Leeds and the Christmas markets looked even more prettier during snow.
Thoughtful tips
I would also like to give some personal tips so that you feel better while spending Christmas away from home:
- Schedule video calls with your family and friends back home: Sharing your experiences with them can make you feel closer, even from afar.
- Create New Traditions: Whether it’s baking cookies with your friends or watching a Christmas movie marathon, making your own traditions can bring comfort and joy.
- Explore Your Surroundings: Take advantage of the festive events and decorations in your city. It’s a great way to lift your spirits and create wonderful memories.
- Treat Yourself: Whether it’s enjoying a cosy drink at a café or buying a small gift for yourself, little acts of self-care go a long way.
Spending Christmas away from home isn’t always easy, but it’s a journey of self-discovery and growth. My time in Leeds has shown me the beauty of finding joy in new experiences, appreciating the people around me, and making the most of where I am. They say home is where your heart is and now I proudly say that Leeds is my second home. If you’re staying here over Christmas, embrace the magic of the city and create your own festive cheer. It might be lonely at the beginning but trust me you’ll love it here. Leeds Beckett University and the city have so much to offer, and I promise it’ll be a Christmas to remember!
Happy holidays and cheers to making the most of this festive season!
