City Campus Bees

We now have bee hives on City Campus!

Published on 19 Oct 2021

Our Becket Bees Green Impact team has worked very hard to get new beehives on our City campus and we now have approximately 45,000 bees who have made these hives into homes. Appropriately, these beehives can be found right on the roof of the Woodhouse Building, right above the LBSU Hive stage!  This project has involved members of The Law School, Sustainability, Estates and Placement teams working together to help improve our city campus biodiversity.

Some bees in a hive

The bees are a great addition to our campus and will help to increase  biodiversity. They will help to pollinate green spaces across the city and will start to come back out in late April to early May when the weather gets warmer.

These bees will produce honey which will then be harvested if there is enough excess which is then likely to be sold at the university, meaning you can pick up a jar yourself from a coffee shop on campus.

Julie Noble, who is one of the project leads, tells us that her favourite part of looking after the bees is that “On a nice calm sunny day you can completely lose yourself in what you are doing. Your focus is 100% on the bees, watching them go about their work, listening to the gentle hum of happy bees, very calming. Don’t ask me about a bad day!”

Prison Bees:

Did you know that, across England and Wales, over 3 million bees are being cared for by prisoners? This helps to support the wellbeing of prisoners whilst teaching them new skills. Some prisons even have their carpentry workshops making hives to be sent out and used by other prisons. You can read more about these projects here:
