If you have already successfully completed an IOSH-accredited postgraduate diploma, you could convert your qualification into a master’s degree by studying two additional research modules part-time over one year.

Entry requirements
Applicants should either have at least a second class honours degree or have equivalent experience or training, normally from within the work environment. Your first degree must also have had a research training component. Applicants applying based on experience should provide evidence of evaluation and implementation of policy and guidance within health and safety to meet this requirement.
Applicants who have completed an IOSH accredited PGDip Health & Safety will be considered for advanced entry and will only need to complete a further 60 level 7 credit points.
All applicants should complete a supporting statement as part of their application. Your supporting statement should demonstrate your understanding and experience of health and safety. In no more than 500 words your supporting statement should cover the following two key areas that are deemed essential for entry to a professional Health and Safety course and for a future Health and Safety Practitioner:
- A commitment to health and safety with a planned career move to work within a health and safety role, or continuation/career progression within a health and safety role – you should demonstrate your reasons for applying for the course and your understanding of health and safety roles.
- Display an awareness of the role and duties of a health and safety practitioner and provide evidence to demonstrate this – you should demonstrate your motivation to seek out relevant learning opportunities and experiences to find out more about what health and safety practitioners do; this may include work experience, volunteering, shadowing, online research, webinars, IOSH meetings, professional websites, personal experience; you should be able to clearly demonstrate your learning from these experiences and be able to demonstrate that you understand the roles and responsibilities of the health and safety practitioner across a range of settings.

We may use selection criteria based on your personal attributes; experience and/or commitment to the area of study. This information will be derived from your personal statement and reference and will only be used if you have met the general entry requirements.
Independent study is a crucial part of learning at university and you will be required to undertake many hours of self-directed research and reading, and preparation and writing of assessments. Your course is delivered through a number of modules, which will help you to plan your time and establish a study routine. Outside of your lectures, workshops and tutorials, a range of support is available to assist with your independent study. Our subject-specific librarians will be on hand to direct you to the specialist learning and study-skill resources. You’ll also be assigned an academic advisor to give you tailored feedback and support.

What you'll learn
Examine how the working relationship between operator, machine and environment can be adapted for efficiency and safety, understanding the design features and environmental stressors that can occur.
Study the requirements that are placed upon organisations to ensure legal compliance to enable the management of health and safety risks, and critically relate good practice to the legal requirements so that compliance can be achieved.
Critically examine the concept of risk as the product of probability and consequences. Develop knowledge of the strengths and weaknesses of the analytical techniques and the data requirements for quantification.
Gain the theoretical foundation and practical skills required to complete small-scale research or a practice development project. Learn how to write a research proposal, conduct research and analyse relevant data.
Learn how to apply your knowledge and skills to other work settings or environments.
Focus on the health aspects that may occur if good workplaces and practices are not developed, looking at both physical and mental health, and concepts of wellbeing.
Develop the knowledge of the common types of hazards, and the risk assessment process and skills in the completion of different types of risk assessment for the identified hazards.

- Access to software, including five free copies of Microsoft Office 365 to install on your PC,laptop and MAC, and access to free high-end software via the Leeds Beckett remote app

Access to course resources, equipment and facilities, including:
- Acoustics laboratory, our fully equipped, state-of-the-art acoustics laboratory has anechoic and reverberation chambers as well as modern noise analysis equipment
- Clinical skills suite with specialist equipment in purpose-built rooms enabling a variety of sessions to be carried out in a suitable and safe environment

- Student membership of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) (free if you study full-time, £50 per year if you study part-time)

Other study-related expenses to consider: materials that you will need to complete your course such as books (whilst the library provides access to readings recommended for your modules, you may wish to purchase your own copies of some books); you can also make suggestions for books to be added to Library stock; placement costs (these may include travel expenses and living costs); student visas (international students only); printing, photocopying and stationery (you may need to pay for multiple copies of your dissertation or final project to be printed and bound); events associated with your course such as field trips; study abroad opportunities (travel costs and accommodation, visas and immunisations). Other costs could include academic conferences (travel costs) and professional-body membership (where applicable). The costs you will need to cover for graduation will include gown hire and guest tickets, and optional extras such as professional photography.
As well as your mobile phone, you will also need access to a desktop computer and/or laptop to complete assignments and access university online services such as MyBeckett, your virtual learning environment. You can book and borrow AV equipment through the media equipment service accessed online via the student hub and located in the library at each campus. Equipment includes: 360 Cameras, iPads, GoPros, MacBooks, portable data projectors, portable projection screens, flipchart stands, remote presenters, digital cameras and camcorders, SLR cameras, speakers, microphones, headphones, headsets, tripods, digital audio recorders and PC/laptops (a laptop loans service is provided on campus in the library on both campuses). Student laptops are also available from the laptop lockers located in the libraries.
