Leeds Beckett University are pleased to present as part of Black History Month Jaspreet Kaur exploring the key findings of her narrative-nonfiction book, Brown Girl Like Me (2022). The book explores topics as diverse as mental health, periods, cultural appropriation and love, acting as a powerful manifesto for the empowerment of brown women and girls everywhere.
In the first book to speak directly to the experiences of South Asian women in Britain since 1978, author, teacher and poet Jaspreet Kaur delves into some of the most complex conversations brown women are tackling today. With expert, accessible explorations of topics from beauty standards to family and education, this book is essential reading for anyone wanting to build a fuller picture of women’s lives in Britain today across a wide variety of backgrounds and perspectives.
Interwoven with interviews from brilliant South Asian women in the UK and around the world, Brown Girl Like Me gives space to many differing voices and viewpoints, showing that although there is no single experience that all brown women share, there is solidarity and community that extends – online and offline – across the globe.
Throughout Black History Month we will celebrate the culture, history and achievements of black communities. It is an integral part of the university’s calendar of events and supports efforts to develop long-term cultural and institutional change, whilst celebrating the contribution of our staff, students and alumni.
