"Am I contaminated, or am I not?"- Understanding the field, emotions and events
In this seminar, Dr Khyati Tripathi discusses her work in the challenging field of 'death' and 'end of life' events.

Dr Khyati Tripathi is a psychologist and anthropologist with over thirteen years of research experience in death studies. She is a postdoc fellow at the End-of-Life Care Research Group, Vrije Universiteit Brussels.

In this seminar Khyati discusses her work in the challenging field of 'death' and 'end of life' events: "Submerged in the field, the researcher fails to notice how it is constantly changing her. Through this talk, I aim to provide a glimpse into the significant events that help a researcher turn her gaze within, in the quest to understand the tabooed existence of 'death priests'."

Events, Tourism and Hospitality at Leeds Beckett University host an ‘open’ research seminar series each year covering recent advances within the field. We have attracted speakers from universities across the globe to debate issues which affect the events, tourism and hospitality sector.

Khyati Tripathi is a psychologist and anthropologist with over thirteen years of research experience in death studies. She is a postdoc fellow at the End-of-Life Care Research Group, Vrije Universiteit Brussels. She is one of the only Indian scholars approaching death from a multi-disciplinary lens spanning psychology, anthropology and psychoanalysis.

Her work thus creates larger frames of palliative care, bereavement, funerary and post-funerary rituals. She deals with death both at the level of the individual and larger mass trauma events, which has enabled her work on memory. Khyati’s work, however, is not restricted to the Indian context and spans religions and regions in drawing comparisons in the experience of the funeral. She has been and is currently an active member of various global bodies dealing with religion and death. Her larger body of work involves writing definitive pieces on an Indian experience of death.
