BA (Hons) Journalism student Annabel Wales in LA

I decided to study journalism as I’ve always been a creative individual who loves reading and writing. So, when deciding which course to take at Leeds Beckett, BA (Hons) Journalism seemed like a no brainer. I first heard about the LA trip back in January, and at the time, because I had final deadlines approaching, I didn’t give it much thought. However, after considering the opportunities and experience this trip would give me, I decided to submit my showreel and apply. I knew the trip was not only going to be a great personal experience but would help me expand my portfolio and give me relevant experience before graduating.

During the trip, myself and two other journalism students supported the international recruitment team, filming their advertising material and conducting promotional interviews for the university. Supporting the international recruitment team, we filmed multiple coaching sessions, and promoted Leeds Beckett university to different schools. It was a fantastic opportunity to meet lots of new people and interact with American staff and students at the schools. Having never visited an American school before, this was an eye-opening experience to compare how their facilities differ to ours in the UK.

Usually on my course, we work in pairs when filming. However, during this experience, I was attending filming shoots solo, pushing me out of my comfort zone. I found this experience empowering, building the confidence to trust my own ability, something I will carry through to my professional career. My favourite part of the trip was definitely the people I met throughout the ten days. Before leaving for LA, I didn’t know anyone on the trip. Myself and the other journalism students worked so well together, and it’s comforting to think that I made some great friends, and lasting memories thanks to this trip.

I had the opportunity to interview a Leeds Beckett alumni, who has lived in California for 30 years. It was interesting to hear about how his experiences in the UK compare to those he’s had in LA. He also spoke about the differences between UK and American schools, which I found fascinating. During the trip, I honed my existing skills, and learnt many new ones. I really feel as though I got to grips with operating a camera and knowing how to alter the settings dependant on filming conditions. My confidence with video editing has definitely grown, as well as my communication and interview skills.

"I made some great friends and lasting memories thanks to this trip."

I highly recommend anyone wanting to study journalism to consider Leeds Beckett. It’s such a practical course and everything you learn is valuable to the working world. Over the past three years, I have experienced significant growth, not only in the quality of my work but also in my personal confidence. The staff are so helpful and welcoming too. Anytime you need help or support, they are always there to provide it. I graduate this summer and I wanted to end my university experience on a high note, and with this trip, I certainly did!
