Holly Law

“I secured a full-time paralegal position before I completed my LPC.”

Holly Law became the first member of her family to graduate when she crossed the stage at Leeds Beckett Law School’s graduation ceremony on Thursday 18 July 2024.

Here she shares how she’s already secured a job since finishing university, and her career aspirations for the future.

“I joined the LLB undergraduate degree course at Leeds Beckett during the pandemic. I’d studied law at A level and took a fancy to it, so I figured if I enjoyed something, I’d probably do better at it. And I evidently have!

“I loved my three years on the course and it all paid off when I got my first class honours in 2023. I then stayed at Leeds Beckett to do the integrated master’s LPC, so when I graduate this summer, it’ll be a double celebration. My mum and dad are really excited as I’m the first member of the family to graduate, and with a distinction as well for my LPC. That’s a great achievement.

“I chose to do the LPC because I want to be a solicitor. I’ve had so much advice and support from the academic team, many of whom are practising solicitors. The LPC has given me a lot of confidence; I particularly enjoyed the oral advocacy exam where we had to argue with other students, in front of a judge in our campus courtroom. We were given a case bundle and had to act as the defendant or claimant, an experience I’d never had before and thoroughly enjoyed. I won all three of the cases.

“I’ve now secured a job as a paralegal in the Wills and Probate department at a law firm in Doncaster, which I’ll do for a year before securing my training contract. I did work experience for the company in September 2023, which has since led to a full-time job. I draft a lot of wills and power of attorneys, and enjoy sitting in on client appointments. I’m excited to work in other departments and experience all the different types of law.”

Joe Swan

“I’ve got a job at Switalskis solicitors in the abuse compensation team.”

Joe Swan is a mature student who has just graduated from the LLM in Legal Practice course, with his two young children watching from the audience. An exemplary student throughout his time at Leeds Law School, we are thrilled Joe has secured employment so quickly.

“A mentor that I was paired with through the Mentoring Scheme at Leeds Law School worked at Switalskis and helped me to get some work experience at the firm. That has now turned into a job offer of a full-time paralegal.

“In terms of experience in the area, the work aligns with the kind of career path I had envisioned: working with a vulnerable client group and supporting them to turn their circumstances around.

“My ambition is to obtain a training contract within Switalskis next year, to become a solicitor. I’m a mature student with two small children so going to university in Leeds was important and getting a job close by. The role is based in Wakefield, but they have offices all over West Yorkshire.”
