Leeds Beckett in top 10 for equal access for students
A report by the Higher Education Policy Institute (HEPI) placed Leeds Beckett at seventh, after looking at the equity of participation in UK universities.
It looked at UCAS university participation data from 2016.
Professor Peter Slee, Vice Chancellor at the university, said: "Leeds Beckett University is proud to be a key partner in our city's Inclusive Growth Strategy, which aims to ensure everyone shares the benefits of a growing economy.
"A big part of that strategy is extending the benefits of an excellent education to the whole population of our Leeds and the wider region. These figures show that Leeds Beckett University is making a major contribution to delivering that aim."
As part of the university’s widening participation programme, Leeds Beckett delivers programmes aimed at communities who have lower participation rates in higher education, including white working class boys, student from BME groups, care leavers and looked after students.
The university also focuses on raising the aspirations of pupils in schools within more deprived areas with events such as the school-based lecture series, the Advantage Programme, which aims to deliver an extensive range of subject-specific lectures to partner schools and colleges within low participation areas.
A scheme called Tomorrow’s Professionals Programme has also been developed by the university, which aims to engage students in the region who have the potential to progress to university, but are disadvantaged due to socio-economic factors.
