Full planning approval for new teaching and research building
Leeds Beckett University has been given the go ahead to develop a new state-of-the-art teaching and research building at the Headingley Campus.
The Carnegie School of Sport building will be home to students and staff from the Carnegie School of Sport. The £45m facility, designed by architects Sheppard Robson, will be a base for the school’s undergraduate, postgraduate and research programmes and will provide a hub for the elite athletes who use the university’s sports performance expertise.
The building will feature a range of specialist facilities including a 60m covered rooftop running track and an environmental chamber which can mimic different altitudes and environments.
Professor Peter Slee, vice chancellor, said: “This £45m world-class facility will underline our global reputation for delivering high-impact sports teaching and research. It is part of a wider £200m programme of investment across our campuses which will further increase the positive contribution we make to our city region and beyond.”
Peter Mackreth, dean of the Carnegie School of Sport, added: “Many of our academics are international leaders in their field, from anti-doping policy and gender equality in sport to obesity prevention and sport performance. This outstanding new facility will help to ensure that our university continues to attract the most talented students and staff to further enhance our reputation for world-leading research in sport.”
Construction on the new building will begin in July 2018 with completion in November 2019.
The planning approval follows the start of a number of other developments taking place across the university, to transform and enhance our campuses. These developments are a part of £200m programme of investment in the university estate over the next five years.
Trevor Armour, director of estates, said: “Work is well underway on the new £80m Leeds School of Arts building at the city campus. All of the piles have been constructed and the basement excavation has now commenced, leaving us on track to be complete and ready for September 2020.
“The ground floor and reception area of the Northern Terrace building, home to the School of Built Environment and Engineering, is currently undergoing significant refurbishment work, which will be ready next month.
“At Headingley campus, the construction of the new Carnegie teacher education building is now complete. This replaces the teaching space lost as a result of the demolition of the design technology block which will take place in early July to make way for the new teaching and research development.
“Over summer we will also see a transformation of our library spaces, with the ground floors of the Sheila Silver library and the Headingley library undergoing refurbishment work worth over half a million pounds.”
