Charities benefit from NSS donations
The NSS is a nationwide experience survey that seeks student feedback on their whole university journey. The survey not only helps us understand what we are doing well, but also highlights areas where improvements can be made to enhance the experience for future students.
The results of the NSS also helps prospective students make decisions about where and what to study so the results are really important to us.
Now the survey has finished for another year, we contacted the chosen charities to ask how these donations would support the wonderful work they do:
Emma’s Embrace (Local Charity)
Emma’s Embrace was founded by the parents of Leeds Beckett student, Emma Kirk, who sadly took her own life in 2018. Theresa Kirk (Emma’s mother) and her family now work tirelessly to support young people. Emma’s Embrace run a weekly Saturday Breakfast Club from the Cardigan Centre in Headingley. The Breakfast Club is run entirely by volunteers who vary in age from current students to parents and grandparents. They know that many students report feeling lonely or homesick, especially at the weekend, so they wanted to do something to help. The Breakfast Club is a place that students can attend for a few hours a week to an environment that is welcoming, relaxed and leave feeling valued and cared about. Theresa has told us the following about how the donation from our students will support their cause:
“The money raised by Leeds Beckett will go towards funding 10 weeks rent of the Students Breakfast Club. On behalf of the Trustees and Friends of Emma’s Embrace, I would like to thank you for selecting Emma’s Embrace as one of your chosen charities. We were thrilled to realise that over a thousand students nominated us and we can’t thank you enough.”
Shelter (National Charity)
Each year, Shelter helps millions of people struggling with bad housing or homelessness. They provide face to face and online advice, as well as legal support to those who might have lost their homes or are facing eviction. Shelter has a national helpline open 365 days a year, and this is often the first point of contact for many facing housing issues in order to access support. Ros, a Community Fundraising Assistant for the charity says:
“Thank you so much, your amazing support is so appreciated. It’s so kind of you to select us as one of your charities and thank you to the students for choosing to donate to Shelter.”
British Red Cross (International Charity)
The British Red Cross plays a vital role in emergency response, and the ongoing, ever-changing situation concerning the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic is no exception. In times of crisis, Red Cross are there to help people. Their network of incredible staff and volunteers means they are uniquely placed to reach people in fearful, uncertain times. The charity said:
“We would like to thank Leeds Beckett University for your kind donation in support of the British Red Cross’ response to Covid-19 in the UK. Your support will be critical in helping those most affected by the recent coronavirus outbreak in the coming weeks and months.”
Thank you to our final year students who have taken part in this year’s survey. You have made a difference to the lives of many by choosing to donate to one of these three amazing charities.
