Leeds Beckett students awarded scholarships to support their studies
First year students Evelina Flewitt-Tilston, Muhammed Maumoniat, Chloe McCann, Lauren Priestley and Ian Stokes were awarded the Bright Futures Scholarship of £1,500 each to help them throughout their studies.
Bright Futures Scholarship recipient Ian Stokes was inspired to study Filmmaking by their childhood experiences of theatre. Ian said: “I really enjoyed theatre acting when I was younger, but as a transgender person I grew frustrated that I was being cast in roles that didn’t match who I was. This inspired me to get into Filmmaking so that I would be able to write my own stories, make stories available for others like me, and make roles available for others like me to act in.
“I am so grateful for the generosity of those who studied before me who have made the decision to aid students as they study their passions. Their generosity will make a lasting impact on my life, and I do not know how to thank them enough.”
Scholarships supported by graduates of the Carnegie School of Sport from the 70s and 80s have been awarded to Hasan Din, Kinga Wota and Lewis Hyland-Dugbo who are all studying sports-related subjects.
Janet Reveley who helped to set up one of the awards said: “For us, giving together was a way to cement our long-standing relationship with Carnegie and leave a legacy. Hopefully we will be helping current students to be able to stay at university and have a great educational experience, make lifelong friendships, and maximise the development of new skills to set them up for their career.”
Macy Walker and Joe Hennigan were awarded the Paul Wilmott Scholarship and the Andrew Platten Scholarship respectively. Paul and Andrew were both colleagues who made an outstanding contribution to the university, and the scholarships are awarded in their memory.
In Leeds Law School the Halifax Law Society Scholarship was awarded to aspiring lawyers Niaya Williams-Franklyn and Caitlin Smith, supported by the Halifax Law Society Scholarship and the Community Foundation for Calderdale.
One of this year’s two recipients, Niaya, who is studying Law with Criminology, said on receiving the scholarship: “Growing up I saw issues around me with crime and violence in my local area. I aspired to become a lawyer so that I could make a difference and be able to make a contribution to help fix those issues. It is incredibly motivating to me to know that I have the support of the Halifax Law Society behind me to help me to achieve my goals.”
Counselling & Mental Health student Laura Clarkson has been awarded the Professor Bligh Scholarship. The scholarship is awarded by alumnus Professor Bligh to a student who has excelled in their first year at LBU and has an intellectual passion for their subject, to give them the financial support to help them to succeed in their studies and take up additional academic opportunities.
Four BA (Hons) Accounting and Finance students have also been awarded the Sir Bob Murray CBE Scholarship which was first awarded in 2012 and is supported by the Chancellor of Leeds Beckett University.
Sir Bob, who himself qualified as a Chartered Certified Accountant from LBU in 1972, said: “Leeds Beckett continues to transform the lives and prospects of thousands of individuals and organisations every day in the city, the wider region, and beyond. As a graduate myself, I continue to support a number of students through my scholarship fund. It’s always a real honour to be able to give these talented students the extra support to succeed in their education.
“Now more than ever I hope that this scholarship will help and inspire these students to find the self-confidence to overcome barriers and understand that they too can succeed through hard work and determination.”
