Leeds Beckett University welcomes leading lawyer for guest lecture
As part of Leeds Law School’s Law in Practice series, Lord Dyson will talk through his highly successful career, rising to become the second most important member of the judiciary in the country, the Master of the Rolls, in 2012, and a Justice of the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom.
As one of the leading lawyers of his generation, Lord Dyson will share his experiences and challenges on the bench and talk about the art of advocacy, his life, justice, and the law.
Raised in Yorkshire, from eastern European Jewish heritage, Lord Dyson has strong roots in the city of Leeds, where he studied before reading Classics at Oxford’s Wadham College.
In his long judicial career, Lord Dyson acted in many high-profile cases across civil law, including contract, construction and commercial law, general common law, international law, and public and human rights law. Many of his judgments are reported in the Law Reports and are frequently cited as precedents. Last year he authored the report into the 1995 interview of Princess Diana by Martin Bashir.
Professor Deveral Capps, Dean of Leeds Law School, said: “Lord John Dyson is among the leading lawyers of his generation and we are delighted that he will be sharing his vast experience as we welcome back our annual guest lecture series.
“This will be a rare opportunity to hear the former Master of the Rolls and Justice of the Supreme Court talk about his high-profile career at the Bar and glean some words of advice for those going into practice.
“Lord Dyson’s lecture is an example of Leeds Law School’s strong network and connections with the legal community.”
Leeds Law School's Law in Practice events are open to legal professionals, students and those with an interest in the subject area. Past lectures have been delivered by prominent members of the legal community, such as Sir Keir Starmer QC, Caroline Goodwin QC, Catherine Dixon, then CEO of the Law Society, England & Wales, Professor Nick Hardwick, former Head of Parole Board and Shami Chakrabarti, then Director of Liberty.
The Law in Practice lecture with Lord Dyson is a free hybrid event taking place between 18:00 - 19:00 on Thursday 31 March. The lecture can be attended online or at The Rose Bowl, Lecture Theatre A, Portland Crescent at Leeds Beckett University’s city campus, LS1 3HB.
