LBU partner club victorious in first direct arena clash
Since the team’s formation in 2017, Leeds Rhinos Netball and the Carnegie School of Sport, at Leeds Beckett University, have been working together to support the growth of netball and wider women’s sport across all ages and communities.
Leeds Rhinos Netball’s partnership with Leeds Beckett University allows their squads to benefit from the Carnegie School of Sport’s expertise, with staff and students from the university working within the organisation to provide support to maximise their performance.
Sport science support for the Super League squad is led by Dr Sarah Whitehead, who is a senior lecturer in Strength and Conditioning at Leeds Beckett University and Head of Athletic Performance and development at Leeds Rhinos Netball.
Dr Sarah Whitehead said: “The partnership with Leeds Beckett University has been key in the growth of the franchise since its formation in 2017. The world class facilities and equipment at the Carnegie School of Sport supports the development of our athletes and their preparation for competition, assisting them to perform at the top level."
The Rhinos are supported with strength and conditioning, nutrition, sport psychology and sports science by LBU academics, Sarah Chantler, Dr Gareth Jowett, Anthony Clark, Ross Shand and Steph Roe alongside Strength and Conditioning Masters students Keyaira Corbray and Katherine Cuthbert and Science of Sports Performance student Murray Bingham.
Murray Bingham said: “I’ve been with Leeds Rhinos Netball for a few months now and it’s been a great opportunity to take a more practical and applied approach to learning.
“The knowledge and experience gained has been completely invaluable, especially working with Sarah and Anthony who are both extremely knowledgeable and have always been very approachable answering all my questions, providing practical examples and insight on the work they do.
“The work there has been very complementary towards my studies significantly broadening my understanding, putting me in an elite environment where I can see the application of principles I’ve been taught on my course and how they play out in a real-world setting. The whole environment and setup they have is brilliant and I’ve really enjoyed my time there.”
Leeds Beckett University Fashion Marketing student, Brittany Coleman, is also part of Leeds Rhinos first team squad this season.
The Carnegie School of Sport Building boasts a wealth of outstanding facilities including dedicated research laboratories, a hypoxic laboratory, a health and wellbeing studio, a covered rooftop 60m sprint track, enhanced strength and conditioning spaces, and changing and recovery facilities.
The facility at Leeds Beckett University’s Headingley Campus is a base for the Carnegie School of Sport’s undergraduate, postgraduate and research programmes and provides a hub for elite athletes who use the university’s sports performance expertise.
