Leeds Beckett University students to clean up after 4/20 festival
A group of BA (Hons) Events Management students have organised the ‘big 4/21cleanup’ to tackle the mess left behind after the unofficial festival which attracts large crowds on 20 April every year.
The group wants to show the positive contribution students make to their local community and encourage people to look after these important spaces.
Rebecca Adkin, one of the organisers, said: “The 4/20 festival attracts a lot of attention every year and while many people take their litter home with them, there are some who just won’t clean up after themselves. We want to do our part to look after these important community spaces and show the positive contribution students make to the city.
“We’d love to join forces with any other groups of students and the wider community, so please get in touch if you’d like to volunteer.”
The student organisers are also raising money for Oblong, the charity looking after the Woodhouse Community Centre. Throughout the years, Oblong has been supporting the local community by providing mental health resources, education, training, arts and wellness activities and responding to residents’ needs. So far, the students have raised £265 for the charity.
Dr Lucy Laville, Course Director for Events Management at Leeds Beckett University, said: “Each year, our students organise a wide range of events for local charities and community groups, raising money and awareness. This event in Woodhouse Moor and Hyde Park is a great example of how our students work with and support local community groups.
“The student group developed the event concept and will manage a team of volunteers on the day to include fellow students and members of the local community, putting into practice what they learn at the UK Centre for Events Management.”
The UK Centre for Events Management is a Centre of Excellence in the School of Events, Tourism and Hospitality Management at Leeds Beckett University, working with industry partners to train students on the undergraduate and postgraduate Events Management courses, through hands-on work experience.
The ‘big 4/21 cleanup’ will take place in Woodhouse Moor and Hyde Park all day on 21 April and anyone interested in volunteering can do so through the online form.
