Leeds Beckett University welcomes Swedish Ambassador for guest lecture on the invasion of Ukraine
As part of Leeds Law School’s Law in Practice series, Ambassador Ehrenkrona will share a legal breakdown of the invasion in Ukraine, the Crime of Aggression and ultimately answer the question, can Putin be prosecuted?
The Russian invasion of Ukraine in February led to condemnation across the globe, and the apparent targeting of civilians has led to claims of war crimes. Ambassador Ehrenkrona will provide a commentary on the legalities surrounding the indictment of President Putin. During his career, Ambassador Ehrenkrona served as Director-General for Legal Affairs in the Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs. Throughout his career, he represented the Swedish Government in cases before international courts including The European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg and the European Court of Justice in Luxemburg. He worked on cases before the UN Human Rights Treaty Bodies and represented Sweden in the UN Sixth Committee.
He also represented Sweden in the final stages of the negotiations on the Crime of Aggression and the subsequent amendments to be included in the Rome Statute.
Professor Deveral Capps, Dean of Leeds Law School, said: “We are thrilled that Ambassador Carl Henrik Ehrenkrona will be joining our annual guest lecture series, to present a legal analysis of the invasion of Ukraine.
“This will be an important opportunity to hear a legal perspective into the current key legal issues surrounding the military invasion of Ukraine from a leading figure in European law.
Ambassador Ehrenkrona’s lecture is an example of how Leeds Law School tackles important questions about society and how we live. This allows our students the chance to develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills that open doors in a range of careers, inside and outside the courtroom.’’
Leeds Law School's Law in Practice events are open to legal professionals, students, and those with an interest in the subject area. Past lectures have been delivered by prominent members of the legal community, such as Sir Keir Starmer QC, Caroline Goodwin QC, Catherine Dixon, then CEO of the Law Society, England & Wales, Professor Nick Hardwick, then Head of Parole Board and Lord John Dyson, former Master of the Rolls.
The Law in Practice lecture with Ambassador Ehrenkrona is a free event taking place between 18:00 - 19:30 on Monday 25 April.
