LBU students and staff to climb Yorkshire Three Peaks to raise money for motor neurone disease charities
The group from the Outdoor Society and Carnegie School of Sport will take on the challenging trek on 25 May, tackling the peaks of Pen-y-Ghent (694m), Whernside (736m) and Ingleborough (723m). The circular route is approximately 24.5 miles in length with an elevation gain of over 1585m and the aim is to complete the hike in 12 hours.
Instructors and course directors to manage the challenge are being provided by Carnegie Great Outdoors, which is based at the university.
Fatimah Bint-Hanif, Speech and Language Therapy student at Leeds Beckett University, is part of the team organising this event. She said “My admiration for Kevin Sinfield, who has taken on his own challenge to support MND, has inspired me to make a difference.
“By completing the Yorkshire Three Peaks, both students and staff at the university have the opportunity to come together to achieve something really worthwhile as a community. Thank you to everyone who has played a part in making this happen.”
The money raised by the students will be split equally between the Leeds Hospitals Charity appeal to build the Rob Burrow Centre for MND and the MND Association which funds multi-disciplinary care, as well as research into potential treatments for the disease. Staff are fundraising for the Rob Burrow Centre for MND.
Since being diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease in December 2019, Rob Burrow MBE has channelled his energies into working tirelessly to raise awareness and funds to support others who are living with the disease. He was awarded an Honorary Doctorate by Leeds Beckett University in March 2021.
Professor Kevin Till from Carnegie School of Sport said: “Many staff within the Carnegie School of Sport have had the privilege to know and work alongside Rob over the years through our partnership with Leeds Rhinos.
“We are all inspired by Rob’s fight against MND and the amazing work he has done to raise awareness of the disease. This challenge is a way of us showing our support to help raise much needed funds for the Rob Burrow Centre for MND.”
Leeds Hospitals Charity is appealing to build The Rob Burrow Centre for Motor Neurone Disease, which will see all MND services housed under one roof for the first time. This will help transform the hospital experience for people with MND, their loved ones and the NHS staff caring for them.
Leeds Beckett University will be lighting up buildings blue and orange on 24 and 25 May in support of this cause and to acknowledge the efforts of the students completing the challenge.
There’s a raffle anyone can enter by texting OUTDOOR to 70215 with prizes ranging from a fruit and veg hamper to tickets for a Leeds Rhinos game. Students from the Outdoor Society have already visited a shopping centre in Leeds to help with their fundraising for the challenge.
Students from the rowing club at LBU will also be completing a 24-hour rowing challenge between 23 and 24 May.
