Rachel C. Boyle appointed Dean of Carnegie School of Education
The first woman of colour to be appointed as dean at the university, former primary school teacher Rachel moved to higher education in 2010 and joined Carnegie School of Education in 2020. Her research areas focus on race, racism ethnicity and education, using critical race theory as a theoretical framework to examine ‘race’ inequalities in society, specifically in education.
Her role as dean will see her steer the School, and its seven research and practice centres, in delivering teacher training, and insight and guidance for the education sector.
Rachel said: “I am delighted to be appointed as Dean of the Carnegie School of Education, and I’m looking forward to working with colleagues within the school and across the university in my new capacity to strengthen and build on the exceptional work already being done.
“Our Initial Teacher Education and Interdisciplinary programmes provide students with the very best teaching, mentoring and training experiences, ensuring they are able to enter the world of work as confident and capable educators.
“There is also a wealth of work being done in our research and practice centres, so that we are very well positioned to guide and improve the education sector for this, and future generations.”
Rachel has a passion for, and commitment to, addressing racial inequality in education, underpinned by experiences she had growing up as a mixed-race child in the 1980s. She has worked with trainee teachers to examine the impact of race, racism and ethnicity on the educational experiences of children and young people.
In recent years Rachel has worked across the media to provide commentary on societal issues of racism including the death of George Floyd, the Black Lives Matter movement and racism within the UK.
