Leeds Beckett University graduate wins prestigious awards for his original film soundtracks
Liam Colomer, an MA Music for the Moving Image graduate, won the Best Original Music award at the International Film Festival for Democratic Memory (FESCIMED 2021) for his soundtrack on the documentary 'Generation '94', and the Best Soundtrack award at the Copper Coast International Film Festival (CCIFF 2021) for his soundtrack on the short film 'Solsticio'.
After graduating from Leeds Beckett University in 2019, Liam moved to Germany and started pursuing a career as a freelance composer. Since then, he has worked on music for a wide range of projects, from films, to fashion shows and contemporary dance, all over the world.
Liam said: “During my time at Leeds Beckett, I learned many valuable lessons that served as a foundation for my career: from learning how to properly listen to music, to losing fear of rejection and reaching out to other people. The course also gave me the opportunity to use amazing music facilities.
“When news reached me about my first award I was beyond ecstatic. Going to the ceremony was the best moment in my musical career. For someone who works from home, being recognised in front of other artists and especially having the opportunity to network face-to-face was a very rewarding experience. The second award is also very special since it came from a different country. I am happy to have accomplished what I’ve always dreamed of: being able to live off my music.”
Aris Lanaridis, Lead Tutor for the MA Music for the Moving Image at Leeds Beckett University’s Leeds School of Arts, said: “I couldn’t be prouder of Liam, and all our other students and alumni who are having a real impact within the film music industry.
“For Liam and other Leeds Beckett film composing graduates, getting to work on various projects to start building a successful career is a great achievement in itself, but for his work to lead to two awards in such a short period of time is an incredible success!
“We’re grateful that Liam and other alumni have kept in touch and are helping to inform our curriculum through guest talks. This has served as great inspiration to our students and I am sure it will keep on having the same invaluable impact in the future.”
The Music and Sound students at Leeds Beckett’s Leeds School of Arts benefit from brand-new, industry-standard resources, to support their learning. The new LSA building, which opened last year, includes a reverb and an anechoic chamber, as well as a mastering and ambisonics room with multiple recording studios that students can use during their courses.
