Leeds Beckett support Leeds Rhinos on way to Super League success
Throughout the season, Leeds Rhinos have benefited from cutting-edge performance testing with Leeds Beckett University sports scientists, have received sports massage sessions from BSc (Hons) Sports and Exercise Therapy students, nutritional support at academy and senior levels, as well as guidance from experts and PhD students within the Carnegie Applied Rugby Research Centre.
The Rhinos have academics and PhD students occupy roles within the club as strength & conditioning, nutritional and performance analysis experts. While the club also benefits from the new researching undertaken by the PhD students who regularly work with the club.
The university’s association with Leeds Rhinos has been ongoing for more than a decade, but ahead of the 2022 season the partnership had been further solidified between the two organisations.
As part of the partnership, players and staff from Leeds Rhinos men’s, women’s, academies, and wheelchair teams can access the university’s sports facilities including testing and massage facilities, state-of-the-art gyms, and sports pitches. The wheelchair team regularly trains and plays most of their matches in the university’s sports halls.
The Women’s team won their second Women’s Super League Grand Final on Sunday 18 September, beating York City Knights 12-4. While the Wheelchair team have already won the Challenge Cup, League Leaders’ Shield and are set to play in the Wheelchair Super League Grand Final on Saturday 1 October.
The Rhinos men’s team will take on St Helens in the 25th Betfred Super League Grand Final at Old Trafford on Saturday 24 September, while the Rhinos Academy team will compete against St Helens on Sunday 25 September.
The Carnegie School of Sport building boasts a wealth of outstanding facilities including dedicated research laboratories, a hypoxic laboratory, a health and wellbeing studio, a covered rooftop 60m sprint track, enhanced strength and conditioning spaces, and changing and recovery facilities.
The facility at Leeds Beckett University’s Headingley Campus is a base for the Carnegie School of Sport’s undergraduate, postgraduate and research programmes and provides a hub for the elite athletes who use the university’s sports performance expertise.
